I am running IE6 on XP SP1 Proffesional after a few minutes (sometimes longer) IE stops responding
On selecting Internet options / General / Temporary Internet Files/ Settings the amount of disc space
available has moved from 500mb to 0 if I try to change this back I receive a warning box.

"Please select a value between 1 and 0 for how much disc space temporary files use "

I have also noticed all of my Temp Files and Cookies have been removed !

I have moved the temp folder to a different location, but the problem still exists.

I have run Virus checkers and AD-aware to check my system out, and all is reported clean.

Any help on were to start would be appreciated

    Thank You
    Mick Bristow

    Hi Mick

Welcome to the best, the windows BBS!

Use Kevin's suggestion if you have a dos boot disk and have fat32.

Since you are using XP you cannot shut down to DOS. And if you have NTFS you will not see it if you do boot to DOS!

So! Do these steps in this order, do not retest for your problem untill all steps are done.

    1. There is a proceedure for moving Temp Folders in 2K and XP so unless you knew what you were doing move the folder back.

Even if done correctly this makes your system non standard and hard for others to help you.

    2. let us do the manual cleanups.

    Configure CleanMgr to max settings
    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sageset:1
The above need only be ran once (these settings will be remembered as the default until another sageset is ran).

It will present a menu select all except compress, then

    Go to Start-Run and type

    cleanmgr /sagerun:1
As long as /sageset above has been ran on this computer from now on the /sagerun is the only thing that needs to run.

    3. EasyClean1.7 http://gswi.com/downloads.htm
Run only unnecessary files and registry clean delete all it finds
    DO NOT DO DUPLICATE FILES!!!!

    RegScrubXP http://home.carolina.rr.com/lexunfreeware/RegScrubXPSetup_3.2.exe

    NOTE: W2K and XP only

Select RegScrub finds problems and remove all it finds.

    4. Search for cookies and delete all, only the cookies not the cookie folders.

Since a disk error can cause this go to command prompt and type

    chkdsk/r

it will tell you it must reboot to do this. so do it.

Last thing after reboot go to command prompt

    type

    sfc /scannow

Now reboot and test for problem.

If this does not fix it a (FULL) reinstall of IE6 is next.

But report back these results first as there is a specific proceedure to do a full reinstall of IE.

    http://www.mindspring.com/~dpoch/enigmatic/cachesentry.html

This is a program that fixes serious bugs in the Internet Explorer cache manager (versions 3.0
on up through and including Internet Explorer for Windows XP, and IE6). This program basically
takes over the job of managing the cache from Internet Explorer, and the result is your web
browsing session will be more enjoyable. CacheSentry isn't like those "web acceleration"
programs that hook into IE and attempt to make guesses about your browsing habits. CacheSentry
simply does a better job of removing files from the cache, and fixes a few other bugs present in
    most versions of Internet Explorer.

    Mike,

Thanks for a very informative response, unfortunately it worked for about 20 mins then the problems started again, I also now seem to have "white boxes" around the menu items in certain programmes, maybe this is another problem, that can be tackled with a new thread later.

Anyway I would appreciate the solutions to uninstalling IE6 and to see if this cracks the problem.

    Thanks

    Mick

The fact that it did corrrect for a short time indicates that the IE install may be OK!

We best look a little deeper!

You said you had done a Spy/Adware scan. Are you sure they are toatally up to date.

If not uninstall them and get the very latest from here and run them:

    Spyware and adware removal

    SpyBot http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download
Run this twice delete all it finds, always run this before AdAware

    AdAware 6 http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html
Go thu config/setup and max out the settings. Delete all it finds

    BHO Demon http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm
This program runs stand alone no install is required, post me the items it finds

Additionally do the below so I can see your autostart/startups

    http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/startuplist.zip

All Startuplist does when run is to create a wordpad document that you can copy and paste back to us in a message. So get that back to us.

    Mike

PS The suggestion by JMATT is an execllent program but should not be used untill this problem is fixed. It either may not work properly because of the current problem or cover up something that will bite you later.

OK Mick I see several potential problems

In BHODemon click the iPswitch and details and disallow this to run. This can be turned back on, but for now turn off.

Then D/L and run the below:

    Startup control panel
    http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml

This gives simple and full control of what starts at boot up. After install there will be a Startup icon in control panel.

after installed go to control paned and dbl click Starup Control panel and uncheck the following items. Remember if something don't work correctly after these are unchecked then they can be reactivated by rechecking.

    Ati2evxx.exe
    atiptaxx.exe
    evntsvc.exe
    DirectCD.exe
    reminder.exe
    OSA9.EXE
    LAS0Ads.exe
    qttask.exe
    washidx.exe

Everything above will slow down the system and effect IE stability or speed especialy when this many are running at once. The lasoads.exe and the washidx.exe are the only ones that I think you may need. But disable for testing purposes for now.

There are several more that can be addressed these are the sites to research them.

Are you a Msn messenger user?

    Mike,

I have been running IE6 now for a full day, and seems to be stable, It looks like the answer was in the Startup Programs
There was either a conflict or to much resource being used.

The question for VPN activated, yes this is required to connect to my company's proxy server via the VPN Client on Broadband. and I do not require MSN Messenger (Turned Off in Startup)

Thanks for the extremely Professional approach and commitment
to all those that contributed to this thread. Hopefully this will help others experiencing a similar problem....................
