Hello. Hope someone can help with this problem. Have W98 and IE 6 on AOL. System was working fine, then I stupidly logged on to Micrsosft Updates, which said I needed to update IE and some other security patches. There might also have been an update to Virtual Machine. Everything downloaded and installed, except the IE update, which was too long, and I had to pause it, but it never completed downloading and never started to install. Problem now is that IE cannot access any web pages. AOL loads, but any web address leads to a "Page Unavailable" Error, as though the website is down or discontinued. But it happens with every page.

I have tried all the maneuvers desrcibed here and elsewhere, such as clearing cookies, temp files, reinstalling AOl adapter, deleting global.org, etc. A post from member Starwaves from earlier this year listed several other things to try, and in fact, the winsock.dll was not in the IE folder. I moved it, but no help. SFC finds no corrupted files. IE 6 repair tool made no difference.

I reinstalled both AOL and did an overlay install of W98, also no help.

If anyone knows how to get around this, I'd greatly appreciate the help.

    Thanks.

    Hi Dave

In reply to you direct email. Glad you did do a direct email as I have had my nose to the grindstone lately and may not have checked in.

Your problem "IS" winsock, just making sure that the winsock.dll etc exists in the correct place is not enough. The winsock registry settings are trashed.

    I suggest this!

    1. uninstall ie, this will put you back to a former version.

    test if fixed

    2. if you still have the problem then download the below extract to a floppy and take to the effected computer and run.

    WinSock Fix: http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm

    This should get it but.....

If this does not do it get back and I will guide you thru a full uninstall and reinstall of TCP/IP.

    Good luck!

    Mike

    Hi Mike:

Thanks for offering to help again.

On the Uninstall screen for IE 6 and Tools, the option to restore an older version is dim and not clickable, as is the "Advanced" option. I must have deleted IE 5 at some point when we were cleaning the registry for the last problem I was having. Or perhaps this problem made IE 5 unreachable?

Even though, I did an overlay install of W98 yesterday, trying to fix this problem. Should that have restored IE 5?

I downloaded the Winsock repair tool, and it returned no errors from the registry. The problem is still occuring.

Should not a TCP/IP problem also have been repaired by reinstall W98? I also reinstalled AOL, but no improvement.

    Thanks

    Hi Dave

    No to both questions!

Overlaying windows (not a clean install) will not always correct these types of things. As this type proceedure tries to preserve your settings and so some times saves bad settings.

    OK do this!

    command prompt

    ping 127.0.0.1

    then

    ping yahoo.com

You should get 3 replies from each. Or host not reachable. Let me know the response to both.

If you do get a good reply from yahoo then you are in fact getting out to the www. That will confirm a browser only problem. So do not do the below but get back to me.

If you do not get a positive reply from yahoo then do the following.

Make sure you have all internet settings written down.

    Boot to safe mode.

    1. Completely uninstall AOL!

    2. Use this to completely remove IE http://www.litepc.com/getieradicator.html

    3. in device mgr remove the network card and all adapters

    4. in Add/Remove-settings-communications uncheck to remove Dialup networking (this will remove TCP/IP).

    5. Reboot to full once to complete this. Then reboot once again to safe mode.

    6. Run the registry cleaners to clean up the dregs left by the above operations.

Then reboot to full and reinstall Dialup networking first, then IE, the AOL.

    Hi Mike:

Both pings were received: 0/1/0 and 234/297/250, if the times make a difference.

AOL works, and I can check my AOL email fine, it's just that the "integrated" IE 6 won't let me access anything on the Web itself. This makes AOL useless except for email.

    Thanks

Then this is a browser issue only.

So use the IE Remove tool and remove IE in Safe mode.

You will need to D/L a full IE to use to reinstall.

DO NOT remove AOL or anything from device mgr.

    Hi Mike:

The Uninstall IE 6 feature doesn't give me the option to remove -- only to add a component or to repair.

As an aside, I downloaded Netscape, and it works fine with AOL at the moment. I also added the Avant Browser, but it does the same as IE/AOL -- Says all web pages are unavailable. Does this mean the problem is NOT within IE6??

I do not known anything about Avant, but some of these things are add ons to IE.

The problem now has to be IE related as netscrape and AOL run.

I understood the first time about IE not allowing removal.

But as mentioned above, this will remove IE completely, so you can do a clean install.

Use this to completely remove IE http://www.litepc.com/getieradicator.html

    Hi Mike:

Just wanted to give you some follow up. Had to completely remove all traces of IE, all versions, and download/install IE 6. Seems to work fine, even better than before.

But now when I close any program via C-alt-del, and then close that control window by clicking the upper right hand X, the system totally freezes and needs to be rebooted. If instead I click the "Cancel" button at the bottom of that window though, the window closes without trouble.

Cleaning registry made no difference, and there's no error message to guide me. Does a probable cause spring to mind?

Once again, thanks for your help.

    Dave

No Dave I have no idea on this!

Perhaps someone else has heard of it.

In the meantime unless you are obsessive/compulsive I would leave it alone, since it does close with the close button and all else is OK!

    Just use the close button.
