Trying to help out my neighbor........after upgrading FROM IE 4.01 TO IE 5.5 SP2 (don't want to use IE 6), it will no longer allow him to access the Internet. He uses Earthlink as his ISP, but after upgrading the browser, it won't dial up. I noticed the new browser would ALWAYS automatically check the "work offline" under the File menu. When I uncheck it and try to hit the refresh button, it goes back to checking the "work offline" option once again.

I uninstalled his IE 5.5 SP2 and restored the previous version of IE4.01 and everygthing works just fine as it should. We tried this twice with the same results. Any opinions as to what's happening here?

Have you checked the Tools\Internet Options\Connections to see if they are set up correctly when the IE 5.5 is loaded.

AceH--Can your neighbor phone the ISP? If he is paying for the service, they should help.
As HumBug has suggested, you should check the connections now and compare that all the settings was the same in IE5.5.
And what happens if you do not hit that Refresh button?? Rather enter a URL and click Enter.

He'll have to call Earthlink about this. If I enter a URL and it enter or go it still does not dial up. It just won't dial up no matter what.

BTW this is a MS installation of IE NOT Earthlink's version. After IE 5.5 SP2 is installed, when he tries to access the Internet, the User Name and Password fields are "grayed out" (not available to be used). When we return to IE 4.01 then the User Name and Password fields are USEABLE once again.

AceH--If the ISP can't help, the next time your friend is using IE5.5, he might try Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs|scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer|highlight|click Add/Remove|check the box Repair IE|click OK. If that does not work you got me, but he should try an alternative ISP. No point in paying for something he is not getting.
The matter of a greyed out password window is being discussed at

but so far no solution. Your friend might try some of the ideas, anyway.
