Have IE5.5 SP2 and Win 95b. When I close browser and disconnect from internet, "iexplore" stays running in background, sometimes more than one instance. My resources seemed low and when I con/alt/del it's there. Tried reparing IE, reinstalling IE, reinstalling ISP software, and it still happens. Thanks for any thoughts.

    Hello Jack

A little deep cleaning should at least help. I think your problem may be a BHO or spyware.

Do the following in the order given.

Download and install but do not run the items below:

    Spyware and adware removal
    http://security.kolla.de/index.php?lang=en&page=download

    http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html

    BHO Demon
    http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm

    then

Boot to DOS (not shutdown to DOS). While booting hit F8 to startup menu. Chose "command prompt only ".

    type these commands

del c:\*.swp (may get file not found, is ok)
    del c:\windows\*.swp
    attrib c:\windows\shelli*.* -h
    del c:\windows\shelli*.*
deltree c:\windows\temp\*.* (answer yes to all) "ALL "
    deltree c:\windows\tempor~1\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\history\*.*
    deltree c:\windows\spool\printers\*.*

If you are not comfortable with dos just print this out first and do them as typed. Not as hard as it looks.

Then reboot F8 to safe mode.

Then run Adaware check all configs delete all "ALL" it finds

then SpyBot twice delete all "ALL" it finds

then BHO Demon a normal entry would be Acrobat post back on anything else.

In addition to probably fixing your problem this will definitely help stability and performance. It will clean the slate if the problem is still there it will be easier to pin down.

Back to full to test for problem and report back.

A full scan and defrag are also in order after this cleaning even if defraged recently.

To make sure of the dos name of your C:\Windows\Temporary Internet Files folder:
Open Windows Explorer C:\Windows and right-click the Temporary Internet Files folder. Select Properties. In my case, the MS-Dos name I see is tempor~2 so I would use that instead of tempor~1

Thank you for the great advice. Problem seems to be solved. Had something called "showbehind" a browser enhancer that i think was causing the problem. I don't know where it came from except possibly my nephew downloaded some kind of game pack i've since deleted. Also something called "cleanup.exe" was found. Don't know what that was either. Thank you again for the advice and the download links for theses great tools.
