    I'm running Win98SE - IE 5.5/SP2

Lately I have been getting at random (about 1/2 times in a week) the following error msg while browsing the Web:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
    DETAILS:
IEXPLORE caused a general protection fault in module USER.EXE in 0003:00006d4f

I've already tried the IE Repair Option in Add/Remove Programs without success...

Does anyone know what causes this annoying error?

Tnx Steve, very useful links (I bookmarked them both...) but unfortunately can't find yet anything specifically related to IEXPLORE + the User.exe file...:(

    Hiya

    Have a look at this:

    http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/eruser.htm#ERRIEXPLORER

Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list here.

Also, go here and download AddAware http://tomcoyote.com/lsindex.html

Download and run, ensuring that Deep Registry scan is enabled. Remove all except any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list here.

Also, whilst you're there, download and install RefUpdate to get the latest updates. Just click Connect.

    Hiya

Sorry for the lateness, Outlook died :(

TClockEx: Puts a configurable time/date display in the tray (and other features). Freeware by Dale Nurden http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen and is popular on cover disks. Not required

Navapw32.exe: Introduced with Norton Anti-Virus 2002 to replace Norton Auto-Protect and Norton eMail Protect. With the amount of E-mail borne viruses and those around the web you need it if you're connected. Leaving "Auto-Protect ", "E-mail Scanning" and "Script Blocking" enabled doesn't seem to slow the system down.

    ScanRegistry: keep

TaskMonitor: The Task Monitor checks the disk-access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. The Disk Defragmenter tool uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs that you use frequently are loaded faster. Not required - but can be useful. Note: for Norton Anti-Virus 2002 users, loading TaskMonitor will typically solve many, if not most, of those annoying IE scripting errors (per Symantec's Knowledgebase)

    SystemTray: keep

LoadPowerProfile: Power management specifics such as monitor shut-off, system standby, etc. Associated with power management and is listed twice. keep

AtiCwd32: This utility adds the ATI tab in the advanced display properties (gives the option for TV out). Do not uncheck if there is TV out on the video card

Tweak UI: Restores settings that can't be retained if you have Microsoft's Tweak UI "powertoy" installed

Atikey: Provides System Tray access and key-combo shortcuts to common display functions on ATI video cards. Can be run from Start-> Settings -> Control Panel -> Display. Not required

EM_EXEC: Logitech Mouseware driver. Needed to support some additional functionality of Logitech mice/trackballs

    zSPGuard: Whats that??

Okay, go to Run and type MSCONFIG, startup tab. Uncheck the ones that you don't want, apply and restart.

Have you also checked for a virus:

    http://housecall.antivirus.com/housecall/start_corp.asp

    Also, a cleanup may help:

Go to Tools | Internet Options. General tab. Under Delete Files, delete offline content. Also, clear the History.

Content tab, under AutoComplete, clear Forms and Passwords.

Advanced tab, under Browsing, look for Enable Insta on Demand. Untick.
Under Security, look for Empty Tempory Internet... Tick.
    Apply and OK

Go to Find Files and type in cookie. When found, open the folder, and delete all the cookies found. You won't be able to delete the .dat file found.

For this, go here and get the Spider

Hi eddie, thx for your time but your detailed instructions don't help!
IE now crashes once every 8/10 days so it's impracticable trying to uncheck every setting in MSCONFIG/startup tab and waiting for...

Btw I do know every tip/trick about startup programs tweaking (thx to Paul Collins website!) and I really need every appl running at startup in the list above ...

I do use regularly Spider, Window Washer, WashandGo, TweakIE utilities so I trust everything in my pc is clean and shining... ;)

    Info about zSPGuard here fyi...

    dial-up connection, 56K modem

Think I will resign myself... :(

Reboot to DOS and then type the following (one line at a time - hitting return between each):-

    cd\windows
    deltree history
    exit

NB You may be prompted to confirm the deletion of the folder - if so, click Y.

Hopefully .... maybe .... is it fixed???

Even though the error message generated was different to that specified in the MSKB it was, nonetheless, worth a try.

    Ok ... erm ... well ...

Duplicate DLL's can often result in some very peculiar error messages. If you let my have your e-mail address, I'll send you a small utility (130(ish)kb) which will search your drive and list whatever duplicates are found. Although there are other applications which perform a similar function this one is, to my mind, the best and the only one I trust - for example, whereas most utilities will list *all* duplicates, this one does not list those within the System and Sysbckup folders as these may be used by Windows to restore any essential System DLLs that become corrupted. It does, therefore, generate a list which is *relatively* safe(ish) to use!.

I can't provide a link to this utility - they all appear to be dead!

When you've scanned your drive and have a list of duplicates, work your way through that list and rename the OLDER of the files (something like THIS.DLL to THISDLL.OLD). Do NOT delete the renamed files (yet). Rename only one DLL at a time and, after doing so, tinker with your system for a while to make sure that everything still works before attempting to rename the next file. If duplicates are listed as existing in different places (C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM), it is still OK to rename the older of the two as the DLL does not need to be in both places because, when an application requires a DLL, Windows looks in both of these folders.

Keep a list of what files you have renamed and what you have now called them - this makes it easier to go back an restore the original name in the event of something going wrong! DO NOT rename any Winsock files or MS Office files (although you may have to try this at some later stage if the problem still persists after renaming the initial batch of DLL's).

If the error does not rear its ugly head again and all your applications appear to be working correctly then you can delete the renamed DLL's. I suggest, however, that you do not do so for several weeks just to make sure that no problems come to the surface.

Tread carefully and make sure that your notes are accurate as mistakes can be difficult to undo!

    Good luck!
