I have a Pentium 133 running W95a. I am a Netscape user BUT had to install IE5.0 in order to see a particular site where my daughter had to fill in a form.

I installed IE 5.00.2314.1003 from an MS Office CD. I installed only the browser and two other files which were checked when I did a custom install. I also checked not to associate files.

    1. When I boot up IE automatically launches and in a small window. It is not in my Start Up Folder nor on the systray. How can I disable this?

    2. IE copied my NS bookmarks, and Wordperfect Suites' Documents, Database, Graphics, Spreadsheet and Personal Folders to the Favorites folder. Can I just delete them from the Favorites and not loose them from my WP Suite?

    3. The IE 5 is only 40 bit....How can I update to 128 when IE5.0 is no longer available.

    4. Does any one know of any Security Updates that I need for this version? I checked and only find for version 5.01.

    5. I also need help in customizing many things that I know how to do in NS...like java scrip, cookies, cache size, etc.

    6. When I right click to open in a new window, the web page displays in a small window. How can I fix this?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Ann

PS I have only about 500 megs on my HD....so I can't download much more.

    1. Windows will often remember a window you had open when you shutdown/rebooted. Have you rebooted when the IE window was closed? If not, give it a try. If so, there is a registry location that may have an entry causing the problem but let's try simple first.

    2. Did it actually copy the files or just create shortcuts? If only shortcuts, they don't take up enough room to worry about.

3/4. Sorry. No idea but will certainly research if no one else has an answer for you.

    5. Details please. Exactly what customizing do you want to do to which features?

    6. Somewhat similar situation to #1. Windows will remember the window size and give it to you the same size next time. Try this when you have only one IE window open:
    a. right-click to open a new window.
    b. drag/size it to suit yourself.
    c. close the ORIGINAL window by clicking on the X.
    d. close the new (and appropriately sized) window the same way.

    Newt:

Got two out of six down...only four to go.

    1. I went into Properties, Advanced and on a hunch, unchecked
"show welcome message each time I log on" and now I boot up to my desktop A-OK.

    6. You hit it right on the head. I dragged the window to full size and viola, no more small windows.

    2. What it actually did was put the folders files contained in it in the Favorites. When I open the folders all the files are there. Do you think I could remove the folders to a temporary folder I have and then test my WP Suite?

    5. I just wonder if there are any options under Tools that should be changed?

I really appreciate your help Newt. So far there are no other takers...hahaha!

    Ann...
In your browser window, click on help/about Internet explorer. In the place where it says you have 40 bit, there should be a link to update to 128.

Ann - sorry for the delay in responding but I start at the bottom and work my way up until I go brain dead and that has happened at around the ME section the past few days.

I am still not at all clear on what customizing you want to do but if you can explain at some length, I'm sure that someone can help you out.

And how are you getting on with the security upgrade? Also, if you will be dealing with IE very much, you really might prefer the way 5.5 behaves. Maybe even 6.0 but that seems to get mixed reviews. I love it but some folks seem to hate it so 5.5 is probably a safer middle ground.

As to your preferring NetScrap - I have heard of other folks who did too. Never did figure out why. 'course, that could have to do with the fact I've used IE since Windows first started shipping a sorta-GUI OS and I am just in a rut. Windows version was 3.x as I remember it. :D

To All The Great People On This Board:

Thanks for all the help. I finally got to the web site and downloaded the 128 bit.

I am slowly removing things from the Favorites and storing them in a temporary folder while testing out my WP Suite. So far Okay, just 1 folder missing, but not critical.

As far as customizing, I am happy with how it is working now. It is just that with NS I have more control or it seems like it.

Newt, now you worry me. I would hate to have to update again. What is the difference between 5.0 and 5.5?

All the help is sincerely appreciated.

    Ann
