When I use the "Add or Remove Programs" in the Control Panel I get a large number of programs that I cannot identify. Is there any way to find out what these programs are and what they do? For example,

    J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update -- 4 copies
    MSXML 4.0 SP2 update -- 5 copies
Java (TM) Update -- 5 copies

    May I remove these programs?

Java is required for some websites - when a new version is installed, the old ones remain and the security risks are retained.

Uninstall all the Jave entries (J2SE Runtime Enviroment 5.0 Update -- 4 copies, Java (TM) Update -- 5 copies) except Java(TM) 6 Update 11 if present. If not present download from ....

    http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

    MSXML is required - each entry in Add/Remove programs should have a different KB no. I have 3 instances (XP Pro SP3) - KB927978, 936181 & 954430 plos MSXML 6.0 Parser KB933579.

The simplest way to find out what a program is/does is to Google :)

I would feel sure that a number of your installed programs and applets are insecure and suggest you run Secunia Software Inspector to check, but deal with those Java entries first or they will be flagged as insecure.
