Just upgraded my compaq pressario ez2207 from w98 to XP home, and now my ide cr r /rw drive will not read a data disc unless it has been closed like an audio disc. It will burn a disc with nero will not but not read. I do not have Adaptec on my system ,only Nero, Real Player and Win media player. When I try to open a data disc I had saved from before the upgrade I get F:/ is not accessible, no function. I have uninstalled and reloaded this drive but no go .It is showing a microsoft cdrom driver. and no other options. Also my C drive is numbered 00, my E drive is numbered 00, and my F is numbered 11. Any ideas to fix this Problem?? Thanks for your time.

Eidt note: I deleted the one you had put in the NT section but could easily have just moved that one here for you. And welcome to the forum. Newt

Which version of Nero are you using? If of the same vintage as Win 98 it is may be incompatible with XP - check the Ahead website for updates.

In Device Manager you should see the following drivers :

    C:\Windows\System32\cdrom.sys, imapi.sys and redbook.sys and
    C:\Windows\System32\storprop.dll

It is also possible that the drive is not compatible with XP - check out the manufacturer's web site - there may be a firmware upgrade available.
    - where?

Real Player has been known to cause conflicts.

My drivers are as you say but my driver for 'F' that was chosen is my cd rom driver same as my 'E' drive which is not rewritable.
My Version of Nero is 5.59
In Device Manager my drives are numbered:
    C - 0 (0)
    E - 0(0) CD ROM
    F - 1(1) IDE CDR/RW
How do I check and see if it is looking for a RW drive

Drivers for CD-ROM and CD-RW drives are the same in Device Manager.

When you boot the light on the front of the CD-RW should wink - if it does Windows has it!

I do not see the drive numbering in Device Manager that you describe - exactly where? BTW I have drives A through to P.

Midnight here - will check back in the morning

The lite does not flash upon startup.
The number for the drive is in the properties for the drives
    Hardware:
    Device Manager:
    DVD CDROM drives:
    IDE cd r/rw:
    Properties:
I should be able to check for this drive in Bios but does not show on boot up, How do I ????
Off to work now check back later

That may depend on the model, but Device Manager is seeing it as F drive so Windows has it on boot. Anyway you mention that it will read a closed data CD, so it is working. If you have a CD in the drive when you boot does the read light come on during the boot sequence?

Please post make and model no of this drive - if you don't know download and run Aida32 and look under Storage > Optical Drives in the Left Hand Pane.

While we're trying to sort out this problem you should be able to access your data on those CD's with ISOBuster BTW - will your CDROM read the CD's that have not been closed and those which you wrote before upgrading?

BTW - what happened to D drive??

OK, I'm with you on this - didn't go deep enough.
No problem there 0 (0) indicates Master Drive and 1 (1) indicates Slave Drive (or vice versa)

When I boot an open data cd (a backup from before I upgraded to Xp) the lite will flash numerous times and my desktop appears, then I go to my 'F' drive and explore, the lite flashes and I get a box saying F:\ is not accessible... incorrect function.

The drive is a IDE-CD R/RW 4x4x24 , Manufacturer-HP CD-RW 4x4x24 as supplied by that nice utility you informed me of.

My 'D' drive is used for saved system data under the original Compaq Pressario EZ 2207 setup, I think 'C' was just partitioned.

Thanks for the links to the utilities, and your time and interest...

I feel your pain, I have a Yamaha CDRW that worked fine in XP, formated and then tried to reinstall and nothing, it would boot from DCRW then load setup files then just restart the CDRW over and over. Same machine 2000/98/linux installs fine. Took out the CDRW and put it in the other XP box and it works fine. I have no idea whats wrong. In your case have you tried a clean install of XP, upgrades can really mess things up. Other then this have you run the updates from MS, there is a CDRW patch.
