Hi guys, I have 3 machines on a network 1 cable connection 1 wireless connection with a MS network bridge running on Win xp and using ICS which has been working great.

Then all of a sudden the 2 client machines can't access the internet unless I disable ICS and then reinable it. Then after a reboot it's not working again.

I have searched the internet and this site for an answer. I found a topic on this forum that was exactly the same but that wasn't resolved.

So I desperatly need a network guru to solve this sticky problem.

    Thanks for any help...:)

The details below are from the server machine.

With NBT (NetBIOS over Tcpip) Disabled, what are you using to resolve name to IP address on your local network?

    What operating system(s)?

Any chance of replacing ICS with an inexpensive router/switch? Under $50 these days and on a bad day will function quite a bit better (with more features too) than ICS on a good day.

2 boxes including server are running Win xp pro 1 box running xp home.

The setup I have is printer and file sharing is IpX/SPX with netbios bound. The ICS is TCP/IP With printer and filesharing unbound.

Unfortunatly my ISP BT Internet insists that I use a usb modem from alcatel which they supply if you know of a good router that will work with this modem I would consider buying it.

    Thanks for your quick reply.

    Got it re: ipx.

Re: a router/switch that will work with your modem:

This BeWAN will handle network devices and a USB broadband connection and specifically says it works with the Alcatel Speedtouch. At least I think that's what is says. Listing is in French and I can't find the info in English.

The Draytek Vigor 2200 USB will as well and this review is in English. US source though so the price in in $$ and I'm assuming from your use of BT that you are UK based.

More information Here about the DrayTek.

In either case, you are paying extra for the fact that so few USB-only broadband modems are out there so the router/switch for them is prices about like the Ethernet ones were a couple of years ago.

Another option might be to try and bully BT into changing you to an ethernet modem or to see about the availability of broadband from another provider in your area if there are any.

Re: the original problem of ICS going a little nuts at times.

Now that is a little tougher. I strongly suspect an issue with the networking load on the machine that is acting as your ICS host. Odd that it dies when in use sometimes and always when you reboot.

Here are a couple of general fix-up things to try that will either be helpful or neutral. Neither will make things worse.

    - First, do start~run~cmd to bring up a command prompt then chkdsk /r and follow all the steps needed for it to run at next boot then reboot.

    - When the PC is back up, start~run~sfc /scannow with your XP install CD in the drive.

If you continue to have problems, Reset IP on the host PC. This is in lieu of removing and reloading networking since you can't do that on XP.

BT USB modems are really not much fun - I'm lucky in that my area (North East) has cable so I have 1.5MB cable modem from Telewest

The error log doesnt tell me anything obvious (though that doesnt mean its not there) :D

Can you give any more details of the hardware involved - I'm stumped and fishing wildly now - did someone say fishing, that must be Newt's cue !

If you guys are stuck it's ok. If it were easy to solve I would have done it myself as I know a little about computers. Also it's very difficult to give advice remotely. It has been very good as I have learned a little more. Thanks for your help and if you think of anything please post it.

May be stuck but not quite yet. Maybe.

Those "reset - bad value was ..." entries are right in the area that is giving you trouble so they will either need to get fixed manually or with the reset. Easier if we can get the reset routine to do the job.)
    I would try
    - Disconnecting your network connection
    - Removing ICS
    - Booting to Safe Mode
    - Trying the reset again from there

If that fails, maybe remove the NIC and try again. I honestly am not sure why things are going 'blue screen' bad on you. Any hints in your event logs? Any good information on the BSOD screen? Note: if the blue screen doesn't stick around long enough to read the information, you need to disable 'reboot on error' (see picture below)

Gooday Newt I did what you suggested. Went to safe mode after disabling ICS and did a reset then rebooted normaly no BSOD this time. Unfortunatly this still hasn't cured the problem.

Here is the latest resetlog of the two values you were looking at:

    EDIT:
I also get this error somtimes to start with then after going to dialup connecton\propeties\advanced a few times it dissapears.

    EDIT2:
These errors from event viewer occur as I reinable ICS.

    Warning dhcp

Well, glad it cleaned things up without blowing you up but bummer that things aren't cured.

For some reason I can't open any of your links. May be the way things are set at work since our firewall does the occasional very odd thing and I'm getting 11001 - Host not found Internet Security and Acceleration Server errors instead of the more usual 404s. Basically my gateway device can't find your IP address.

I'll try from home in the morning. Meanwhile, any time you need to post an event log message somewhere, easiest is to open the event and click on the icon below the up/down arrows to send a text copy to your clipboard and then paste that. It should look something like the below (from my PC) when you paste it in.

    Event Type: Warning
    Event Source: EventSystem
    Event Category: (52)
    Event ID: 4356
    Date: 6/3/2004
    Time: 3:08:53 PM
    User: N/A
    Computer: PMUUSWXPLH0NMP
    Description:
The COM+ Event System failed to create an instance of the subscriber partition:{41E90F3E-56C1-4633-81C3-6E8BAC8BDD70}!new:{C2F23AE4-82D8-456F-A4AF-A2655D8CA726}. CoGetObject returned HRESULT 8000401A.

OK If you still can't see the images from home I will post them as you suggested. the top one is not from event viewer so can't do that one will have to type it out manually. In future I will post event viewer errors as text. Cheers.

Still don't know if I can see them from home. Up all night and so slept until just in time to make it to work. Didn't check the forum at all.

LOL - wasn't partying. Wish I had been.

There is something here I'm missing. I have just set the thread to display a printed version and am printing it even as we speak.

Hopefully something will jump out from pages that isn't from the thread display on screen.

Yep it's an odd one alright I've given all the info I can think of so hopefully something will come to you.

In the end if all else fails I can of course reinstall XP but I would really like to crack this in case it happens again and as you know a reinstall is a right pain.

    Thanks again for your help...:)

    EDIT:

Something I have noticed is if you look in my first post there is a differance in the IP routing in the not working ICS IP routing is not enabled whereas in the reinabled and working ICS IP routing is enabled.

I do not know about USB Modems.

But as far as the Networking itself goes I would DUMP ( scrap, trash ) the trouble causing ICS and get a Router Switch to use.

I have heard from Friends that with ICS if one machine goes bonkers it takes them all. I have 3 machines. 1 XP Pro. 1 98SE and 1 98. All have threi own NIC connected to the Router. One goes down ( or even just shut off ) it has NO EFFECT on the others at all.

And unless I am wrong ( which is possible ) ICS DOES depend on ONE machine to get online.

I even now have a Network Printer plugged into the Router. It is available to ALL machine at all times. Again. if one is down the others can still use it.

With a Router EACH MACHINE is STANDALONE.

Newt may be able to help more here.

    Now a question ?

WHY do you have to use a USB Modem ?

Extro - I believe you have found the problem. I had surely looked over that and may have 'nearly noticed' which is why something was nagging at me. As stated in To enable Internet Connection Sharing from a Microsoft article, when you set up ICS is should set up IP routing. Otherwise things don't work.

Now the question is, why does yours drop out. I think we've already done the command to reset IP to it's defaults. Next to try might be Winsock XP Fix.

Billy Bob - His ISP, BT, is one of the larger ones in the UK. Maybe THE largest one. And in some areas it is the only one available if you want broadband. So they tend to do what they want and for some reason (maybe a financial arrangement with a ..... naa, couldn't be that) they seem to have decided to force folks to take a USB modem or not get the service.

Thank you for the info. That answers my question very well.

It also shoots my idea full of holes I guess.

    Solved!

Well done Newt. I ran WinSock XP Fix rebooted and got the BSOD I thought OH NOOOO. The BSOD said there was a problem with Bridge.sys so I rebooted into safe mode with networking support and Deleted the network bridge and rebooted.

The reboot was successfull I then disabled ICS and made another network bridge reinabled ICS rebooted. I was happy to see the other machines on the network connect to the internet when IE was started on the client machines.

It's been a long proccess but well worth the effort. I could not have done it without you Newt so thanks for all your help.
