My neighbor allows me to connect to his wireless router. He says he's got lots more internet than he needs. Can I share this connection with my other computer by use of a router? I have a Motorola vt2442-vd 4 port router with phones connectors for Vonage telephone service. If I can do this, I may start the phone service too.

I won't contribute to this, but if the ISP found this out, I will bet that they cut his service off. Another thing is that suppose that you went someplace and did something wrong/bad, (even if you didn't realize it) it would fall back on him. I am not saying that you would, but just in case.

Just go buy a cheap 10 dollar usb wifi adapter for the other computer. So long as the neighbor's wifi is an open network with no wifi security, it is legal for you to connect to it. But it most likely will violate the terms of service agreement of his ISP. Technically, his ISP could get your criminally charged with theft of service. They would have a difficult time proving theft of service. You and your neighbor must make your own moral decisions. In the end, you'll both probably feel better about yourselves and life in general if you had your own Internet services.

My neighbor knows I need the internet and telephone but can't afford it right now. He's trying to help me out. If I had said I can pick up a free Wi-Fi hotspot, could I get an answer to my question without everyone worrying about the moral issues?

    Thanks Tony,
I had to erect an outdoor antenna in order to get this signal. I can't spend the money to do it again.
I think I should find a forum where I can actually get an answer to my question.

There is a difference between a FREE WIFI HOT SPOT like at McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks and the likes of them compared to a single users residential WIFI.

I won't say anymore about this. It is between you and your neighbor. I was just weighing in on the problems that it could cause.

To answer the question, no, you cannot share the connection using a router, you would need an access point that connects to the neighbor, which could then be connected to a router. Or you could use a wifi-router to connect to the neighbor. The access point or wifi-router must be setup using Repeater Mode or Client Mode.

If this is a temporary connection until you get on your feet financially, you could use a router by running a wire from the neighbor's house to yours.
