    Hi all,

Previous working home setup was Host machine =W2K with modem, and my son's W98SE was client. I setup ICS (shared the modem) and everything was fine; he could connect to our ISP from his machine. TCPIP installed, IP address is automatic, no firewall.

Now he has a new HP Pavilion with XP HOME, and has modem, ethernet and firewire adapters installed. We can share folders between each other, but cannot get the ICS to work. IE (ver 6) says the DNS times out. I'm afraid to uninstall protocols on the XP client and then reinstall them. The XP machine has a firewall program that I think is disabled. The only connection between the two machines is ethernet, nothing is connected to his modem, firewire adapters.

    Thanks for any suggestions,

    Jim C.

You said "We can share folders between each other ". Using TCP/IP or do you have another protocol for internal communications?

ICS and XP as Client ...

My client PC has 1) Client for Microsoft Neworks, 2) File and Printer Sharing, 3) TCPIP ( and NETBIOS is enabled over TCPIP)

Whenever we want to share folders, the first time we have to log into the W2K machine with ID, password. This is the first PC we've owned with IEEE 1394, and also with a software firewall. When I first turned on the PC, the firewall was enabled. Since then I've disabled it. I've plugged a phone line directly into the XP machine, all is OK. However, this is a mess of 20 ft phone wire, running between two bedrooms, and my son is the victim with the XP machine.

First a caution - with File & Printer Sharing enabled as well as NBT (NetBIOS over TCP/IP) you really, seriously, big time need a firewall between your home and the internet.

Take a look at This article and the links it offers and see if you can spot your problem and a fix.

If so, post back with the good news.

If not, post back with further questions.

And it might turn out to be easier if the XP system were the ICS host. Maybe.
