ICQ chat between PC and Mac

I'm on a PC, and my friend is on a Mac. We've been able to chat for years, but recently we both upgraded to ICQ's newest versions: I'm on ICQ Pro 2003b, build 3916, and he's on the Mac 3.4.

Now we can send messages, but we can't chat. When he's on his old version, I get a message that says he is using an older version and that we can't make contact. When he's on his new version, there is no message. We just can't make contact.

Anybody have any suggestions?

I wanted to add to my request for help: Perhaps this new version of ICQ that I have for my PC is stymied by the firewall that is in my Netgear networking??? Perhaps I need to change my connections in ICQ, somehow?
