icons & taskbar missing [crss.exe]

icons & taskbar missing

my friend When he starts up it gets as far as the wall papper but no icons or task bar. He can do a ctr/del and bring up the task manager. That is where he found the crss.exe. he did a google and it told him that it was the worm. He tried to del the process crss.exe but won't let me. I was trying to find a on line scan that will scan the laptop through a network. Anyone have a suggestion as to where I start. I have no xp CD bought the pc as is.
when he boots to safe mode. But no icons wallpapper? when he does a CTL/DEL and brings up the process manager. Still won't let him del the crss.exe. he can with the task mgr up get into msconfig.
hope this makes since , he just wants his icons & task abr back !!!

Which OS? Basically the registry hive or system.ini file has been altered to launch the worm
where it should say
shell=explorer.exe
it now says
shell=explorer.exe crss.exe
this needs to be edited to get rid of the worms entry.
The method depends on the OS.


If instead of ctrl+alt+del he does the windowkey(flag)+R
does the run box load?
If so what happens when he types
explorer.exe
and hits enter.
What happens when he types
regedit
and hits enter.
