There are icons in the system tray that I want to remove. Right-click doesn't give me an option. They aren't in START/PROGRAMS/STARTUP. I want to remove only the icons in the tray, not the programs behind them. They aren't hurting anything, just taking up space. (I'm using Windows ME, which doesn't seem to be on the board anymore; too obsolete?)

    Hi Kingman,

Often the loading of a systray icon is an option that can be found within the programs options/settings. What's the icon's?

    FYI

Windows Me is now included in Legacy Windows - see the note under Legacy Windows under WindowsBBS > Operating Systems.

One for QuickTime, one for Epson copier/printer/scanner. I have a QuickTime icon already on the Desktop, don't need this new one here. I'd like to be able to remove icons in case some bothersome ones show up someday. (Going to work now, won't be back for 9+ hours.)

    Quicktime:
Right-click the turquoise blue “Q” QuickTime icon in the System Tray, and choose “QuickTime Preferences”. Choose the UPDATE tab and uncheck “Check for Updates Automatically”. Next, choose the ADVANCED tab and uncheck “Install QuickTime icon in System Tray”.

I believe there was also a glitch in this whereby even though you disable this now the next you open or use quicktime the icon returns to the systray. It has been recommended that do a file find for qttask.exe and when found rename it to something like qttask.xxx. This does not interfere with the quicktime player just the part of the program that looks for updates automatically. You may have to periodically search for quicktime updates manually, yourself.

    ------------
Epson printer ???? Dunno. Maybe printer model specific. May not be possible as long as you have the printer\scanner connected and on. I'm not sure what ramifications or complications may arise should you disable these. Google.com the *.exe you have loading at startup and hunt and peck your way to advice on whether if you need it loading at startup and if not how to disable it. Our archives also have useful links and advice for controlling startups (I just don't have those links on hand).

    Found one link for ya':

I did the first three things okay. But there are no tabs, ADVANCED or otherwise. (This is QuickTime 5.0.1.) When I try to rename qttask.exe, it says that's being used by Windows. Couldn't rename it in DOS, either. The icon is still in the tray. I'll keep trying.

Hit your key combo of cnt/alt/del to bring up taskmanager. End task on qttask. Then you should be able to rename it since it is not a running process.

You may wish to remove the run line from the registry.
Apparently on some version the option for systray icon can be found in various places. I noticed a browser-plugin dropdown mentioned as holding this option.

Some are probably wondering why I just don't suggest disabling the the startup using msconfig's startup tab. I always try to stay away from this modified startup, which is meant to used as temporary diagnostic startup, to be returned to a normal bootup when the problem or nuisance has been pinned downed and taken care of by a more permanent means. You however may not be so picky so be aware that this is also an option.

Some find this program (among others easier):

I did C-A-D, ended qttask, the icon went away and I renamed qttask.exe. Thanks, Ann. No icon when I power up, and Quick Time still works.
Taskmanager, eh? I've wondered if that box had a name.
