In a thread from 11.4.2008 PeteC refered to a download of IconCache.

I have downloaded IconCache but how do I install it?

When I doubleclick on it, I only get text in noteblock?

    Best regards

That's a .reg file. But why would you want it? First tell us what your problem is you are trying to fix.

When I have programmes open and I e.g. minimize them to the process line a kind of curtain rolls down the screen and all icons on the desktop start refreshing. It is not a problem but a nuisance and I thought that increasing the refresh rate would help.

Well, you could try running the .reg file, but I'm not sure it will help you much.

But just to check it out how do you install it?

When I double click on the downloaded file I only get text and no changes have taken place in the register.

Does it have the extension of *.reg?
A Registry patch is a simple text file with the .REG extension that contains one or more keys or values. If you double-click on a .REG file, the patch is applied to the registry. This is a good way to share, back up or repair small portions of the registry for use on your own computer, or someone else's, because (among other reasons) it's much simpler than manually editing the Registry.

If you right click this does it have the option to Merge. If so do so. Some users have enacted a registry security safety that has *reg files default to open in notepad rather than merge into the registry. This allows one to check out or change any hkey or value that will be made via the registry edit. In that case a right click should have an action of "Merge" that can be used.

    Alternative is :
Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP
Number #121 Increase Icon Cache. Just download and double click on it. Kellys Korner is a trusted site and her tweaks are used, on this board, often. The link leads to a *.vbs script rather than a *.reg patch. Still does the same thing but in a differrent manner. As a side note never use a reg patch or vbs file unless you trust the source, site or file 100%. Virus scan and opening in notepad first allows this extra layer of security. Your getting a pig-in-a-poke. It's best to make sure it says oink rather than BOOOO!

    Iconcache.reg

Attached a copy of iconcache.zip - unzip it to a folder on your hard drive.

Right click iconcache.reg > Merge - you should receive a confirmation that it has been merged with the registry. A double click should have the same effect.

Then go in Windows Explorer > Folder Options > View and scroll down to Icon cache size and set a value larger than the default (screenshot)

    Thanks goddez1 and PeteC.
When I right click I get the merge option but it opens up only in notepad and no additions is made in Folder Options/View and no confirmation is given.

Could it have something to do with what is mentionen by goddez1 about the registry security? How could I check that?

I have ZA Pro and Norton AV installed.

    Start > Run > REGEDIT
    File > Import
and then browse to where you have the REG file saved, and select it.

    Thanks Whitphil it worked.

Register now accepted the iconcache and I shall try to increase the refresh rate and report back, if it solves my problem /nuisance. If not I may probably have to live with it until I change computer :D

Just for reference I had the same problem when I was using Win98 and the iconcache did solve my problem at the time.

Thank you everybody for your valuable input :)
