I have Windows XP on a Dell Inspiron 8000. I recently installed a wireless card for home use, and have been using it for a few days with no problems. I'm the only user of this specific computer, so I never logged off, just shut down. However, whenever I started the computer, it would ask me to log on. I went to User Accounts, and I found some strange account from Machine User or something like that, and so I deleted it since neither I nor anyone I know added it. Soon after I replaced my A drive with an extra battery to charge it up, but the computer got very slow when I did so, and I eventually had to turn it off manually.

When I turned it back on, everything works fine, but now the links on my desktop are messed up. For instance, my Internet Explorer icon looks like a bad, messed-up screen capture in a little square; same with My Documents, My Computer, etc. The only icons that are normal are Outlook Express, My Recycle Bin, and My Network Places. All the desktop links work fine, but the icons are messed up on the desktop and in some of the folders themselves. If I drag an icon from the taskbar to the desktop, it too messes up.

Any advice or help would be appreciated . . .

Hi Drew - and Welcome to the Board :)

Try a Repair of the icons - see here under I = Icons and scroll down to Icon - Repair View
    http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_abc.htm

Alternatively download TweakuiXP and use the Repair Icon feature - essentially the same registry fix as above.

Note that the latest version requires SP 1 to be loaded - and unload any previous versions first.

Fantastic -- downloading the icon fix for the registry worked perfectly. Wish I knew how it did it, but I'm not inclined to be picky . . .

    Thanks, Pete --
