miracleman--I do not recognize that icon, but this might help. (It cannot hurt.)
Delete your C:\windows\Shelliconcache file. (It is a "hidden" file so, to see it, you have to have "Show all Files" checked in Folder Options|View tab.) Then Reboot. ShelliconCache will be recreated and hopefully your icons will be back to normal.
Alternatively you can use TweakUI|Repair Tab|Rebuild Icons. You get TweakUI here if you do not already have it.

As mentioned, the above cannot hurt your PC. Post back if the problem did not go away.

Use TWEAKUI from the link Jim gave you above to change the
    appearance of the Icons.

icons, w'ev got icons, we've got stacks & stacks....

I avoid getting back to you guys, sometimes, 'cause the suggestions you give, 'tho they seem simple, are difficult for me to "activate ". For example...
Jim suggested I use the "TweakUI" download to fix the icon problem, but when I downloaded it, it needed to be opened in "WINZIP ", so I downloaded THAT. BUT>>>> I can't get IT to OPEN!?! (Life used to be simpler. Where are my 8-Tracks?)

miracleman--About TweakUI. That site I gave you downloads an .exe file when I use it. So you should not need WinZip. Why do you think you do? If you are getting a message pls try to post it as accurately as possible.
You should be able to install TweakUI by following these instructions from the download page.
    "Read Me First
    How to Download

Create a folder by right-clicking on the desktop, click New, and then click Folder. Type a name for the folder.
Click the Download Now button at the top or bottom of this page. In the File download dialog box that appears on your screen, click Save Program to Disk.
In the Save As dialog box, choose to save the file in the folder you just created, then click Save.
Open the folder and double-click the downloaded file. This may create several new files in your folder. Among these, look for "Read Me" or "INF" files.
The "Read Me" file will contain any additional download information you need to know. To install the file, right click the .INF file and click Install.
    How to Get Started
You don't need to do anything after downloading. "
Well, those instructions omit one step at the very end. Successful installation puts the TweakUI shortcut icon in your Control Panel, so you have to go there to start TweakUI.

If all OK, try TweakUI|Repair tab|Rebuild Icons, but if not possible (or if TweakUI does not work) do the following
Restart in MS-DOS mode (one of the options from the Shut Down window). When rebooted, type scanreg /restore at the prompt. Click Enter. You should be offered to restore your Registry to at least five dates in the past. Pick/click one that predates the start of problems. Wait. Reboot. How are your icons. (This suggestion will not work unless you have ScanReg running at start-up. You can check that by clicking Start|Run|type msconfig|click OK|click StartUp tab. Do you see ScanReg in the list and is there a check to its left? If yes, all is OK. If no, you probably will not be able use this idea.)

If still no success with the icons, I wonder if you have a virus. Have you an AntiVirus program running all the time? Are the virus definitions up to date?
If not running all the time, scan with it now or, perhaps better, run a scan on line using Housecall.

    Let us know what happens.

P.S. I assume you did reboot after deleting ShelliconCache.

When you DL the tweakui.exe, it will open a small window and tell you where it is going to put the unzipped files. This is automatic, just click unzip.

Usually C:\windows\Temp. Go to that place and right click on the tweakui.inf file and select install. That will put it in you control panel.

Open it from the control panel and go to repair icons. Also go to another part of tweakui and you can do away with the arrows on your shortcuts.
