Any comments on this laptop? Someone has one for sale and I'm leery about IBM.

Hi amaurer2. I have used many IBM labtops in the past and I have been pretty impressed with them. They seem very stable and reliable.

If its of any comfort my mom has an IBM thinkpad that she has had for 7 years and it hasn't had any issues.

They are used where I work. There is a low percentage that need to be worked on as a warranty repair and the warranty is 3 years under our leasing. I was surprised it would be so low, we don't seem to have to use warranty repairs very much.

I have constantly been running or working with IBMs since the early 90's, they have a good support knowledgebase.

"...in general "...they would be my choice. Just watch what Lenovo might bring to the equation.

The IBM and Lenevo laptops I have been given for work have been flawless, but I always keep in mind that they are "mobile computers" and treat them as such. They are not high-end gaming machines and don't overload them with big programs.

Nice and reliable in my opinion. If you want "looks" (design), super power or some other individualistic requirement, maybe look elsewhere. They are a good reliable mobile computer for my part.

    Matt

Certain models had problems with the graphics chip and south bridge. These just needed to be reballed. Some had fan problems. I own two Thinkpads, both T42, and have had great luck with them. They are simple to repair yourself except for the reballing. There are many guides on the Internet for working on them and discussions of their problems.
