I have a 1998 IBM Aptiva 2153 E3N, AMD K6, 300 mhz, 128 RAM, running win98. The computer will turn on, lights and fans, the Aptiva logo screen will come up and then nothing else happens. I cannot get into setup or BIOS as the computer will not respond to any command from the keyboard. I have tried the recovery and restore disk that came with the computer, it does not work. The computer is clean inside and out and all connections have been checked. No noises, no beeps, no nothing but the Aptiva screen. Any one have any ideas? Thank you, LadyGrey:confused:

    LadyGrey,

When you say that the recovery disk doesn't work, do you mean that it installs the software and doesn't help, or you can't get it to install? Have you installed anything right before this started? Have you tried the two button BIOS reset? Hold both mouse buttons down while restarting the computer. May not help, but it doesn't hurt to try.

I'm sure an answer will come from this board, but if you want to try a board for Aptiva users, look here.

    No bootup

Use your win98 startup disk to get the prompt. cd c: [enter]
type: C:\scanreg /restore [enter]. Now select a registry 'bout four days ago:)

If you did not get any beep at startup, most likely you have a hardware problem. If you did not add any hardware to your system check to make sure none of the hardware has come loose. If you want to reset the BIOS to its default setting you could try a two button reset as MinnesotaMike said.
The information on how to do that is at http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DSET-3FZBZ5.html
At http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/DETR-3VXNA3.html you will find the Aptiva 2153 product index. On that page look under the troubleshooting heading you will find index. Click on index and see if any of the information there is a help to you.
