Left my trusy 98SE for a new XP machine. (Got an awesome deal...) Anyway, here goes a whole new set of "How do ya do that's? ". I've pretty much moved most of my "stuff" manually to the new machine, but...

    1) Any way to "move" my Outlook Express address book from and to?
    2) Any way to have the e-mail messages first appear full-screen, instead of in the lil' box?
    3) Any way to put a Control Panel icon on the desktop?
    4) I was using Norton AV, and this unit has it, too. BUT, as I learned the hard way on my old machine (and after spending about $ 75.00), it's a resource-sucking program. Is there a "real ", downloadable, reasonably priced, effective AV out there that DOESN'T use up so much of my PC's resources? (You know... one that actually WORKS!)

    Thanx again.

    1. The OE address book is a .wab file. Search the harddrive of the old machine for "*.wab" (without the quote, with the asterisk and dot). It'll usually fit on a floppy (if the two computers aren't networked) then use OE's File>Import>Address Book, point it at the .wab file on the floppy and tell it to import.
    2. Open an email message, grab the corners/edges of the message window and stretch it to the size you want. All future messages will open to that size.
    3. Open the Control Panel. Click View>Toolbars and make sure the Address Bar is enabled. Grab the tiny icon in the Address Bar (immediately to the left of where it says "Control Panel ") with the left mouse button, drag it to the desktop and drop it. Instant shortcut to the Control Panel.
    4. I use AVG which is free for personal use and can be downloaded from www.grisoft.com. Small footprint, not a resource hog, has worked for me for a year or two. Avast is also free... www.avast.com ...but I haven't used it so can't recommend it.

For number 2 drag the window to full size and then close it. Windows should remember it the next time you open an email. If not, do it again and close the window while holding down the ctrl key.

For number 3, open My Computer, right click on the control panel icon and drag it to your desktop. Release the mouse button and choose create shortcut here. You can also do this using the control panel shortcut in your start menu if you have one there.

    Edit:
Well Daizy, you're not the only one. How did I ever miss that?

If you bought a modern computer, you may find that Norton isn't nearly the drain on system resources that it was on older hardware and Win98. You didn't mention what firewall you are using.

    Unsolicited advice:
    After the XP Pro Install
Install and configure Internet Security Software and Policy before going online

    1. Turn off auto restart
    Control Panel/System/Advanced/Startup and Recovery
uncheck auto restart to prevent an endless loop of boots
    2. Decide option for XP firewall
    3. Pro only- set password expiration to 0
    4. Appearance tweaks- resolution, start menu, taskbars, screensaver, desktop
    5. Set the MS Update policy
    6. Log on Passwords and User accounts and permissions
    7. Set up Outlook Express (import WAB!)
    8. Configure Network and online Connections
    9. Set Power policies
    10. Set Folder views and options
    11. IE Policies and homepage.
    Adjust
Select Tools | Internet Options | General
Under Temporary Internet Files click the Settings button.
In the box for the amount of disk space to use, enter a value between 5 and 80 megabytes.
Click OK to accept the changes.
    12. Bios needs set to boot from cd and/or floppy before hard drive

Hope you are happy with XP, and we are here if you have any questions. :) The only dumb question is the one not asked!
