I am slow getting around to this because it is a small problem. I need to partition WIN7 Ult so I can install SP1. I know it is a simple task but it wants me to use the command of: mountvol /E . My "E" is one of my DVD burners. So, do I just type mountvol /F or if I type mountvol /E it will automatically figure out what to do?

You should not need to alter the disk structure to install a Service Pack. Just go ahead and install it.

Why would you want to partition a disk just for installing a Service Pack ?

"Why would you want to partition a disk just for installing a Service Pack ?" Because that is what microsoft is wanting.

So, to give you a better idea of what is going on when trying to install SP1 I get an error of 0x800FoA12 . So, then I click on "go online to learn more about this issue ". Which is this link: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/...vice-pack-1-sp1-installation-error-0x800F0A12 . And when you get to that page my error is the 2nd one: Error reads "The boot configuration data store could not be opened. The system cannot find the file specified file ". Read the details on that and let me know. I did do the mountvol /E and rebooted the computer and nothing happened, good or bad.

    According to your profile:

So I'll leave it to someone who is dual booting with Linux to comment further, but note what is suggested on the Microsoft page you referenced:

You'll probably have to create a system repair disk first, then shut down. Then remove the Linux hard drives. Then boot using the repair disk and use the Bootrec.exe tool. Then boot to win7 & install SP1.

Next, put back the Linux drives & update GRUB.

I used to triple boot Debian, XP & Win7 on three separate drives. GRUB handled it OK. But more often than not I used the bios hard disk selection screen to choose the drive I wanted to boot.

If all your operating systems are on a single drive, then you'll have to run bootrec.exe & it will overwrite GRUB files and you should be able to boot to Win7 & install the service pack. After that, you'll have to boot with a Linux cd or boot disk to restore GRUB, else you'll not be able to boot Linux.

Tip: when trying multiple Linux distros, always keep them on a separate drive than windows.

Okay, I forgot that the other drives would affect how Win7 acts. I alomost think that if I set my BIOS to look at the Windows HDD I might be able to get away with this. If not I will go with the given suggestions. Will report back as soon as I can on this.

It won't happen Pepse, GRUB takes over and causes your issues.

Just to be clear what is your boot loader. Grub 1.x and 2.x are different. If the OS's are on separate drives you may get away with it but I doubt this.

My GRUB is: GRUB Ver: 1.98+20100804-ubuntu3.3. And Yes my OS's are on 4 separate hard drives; always have been, always will:). I will give a try in the morning, I hope.

If the operating systems are on separate drives then there's no problem. GRUB will be OK and won't interfere. GRUB is not what's causing the issue here.

His operating systems ARE on separate drives and the solution I posted is the only one that will work. GRUB is located in the MBR of the disk that Linux is installed on, and its files are in the /boot directory of the Linux partition. If that drive is connected, he must remove it and Windows 7 will boot just fine, because Windows 7 boot files will be on the same drive as the Windows 7 operating system, in a separate small partition.

If he changes the drive boot order via the bios, he will be able to boot Windows 7 and bypass GRUB, but he still may have troubles installing the service pack. After changing back the bios boot order, at next Windows 7 reboot, it will likely complain about needing to repair the boot files, because Windows 7 boot files index the other drives and operating systems, even if the other systems have not been manually added to the Windows 7 boot menu.

His version of GRUB is the legacy version, and is very easy to manually update after he follows my instructions above. Actually, he won't have to update GRUB at all if the bios drive boot order does not change and the same drive motherboard connections are used. (do not change channels the drives use)

Tony, I have no doubt about your greater knowledge on this aspect, you've taught me a lot in the past :)

My only concern is even if Pepse installed Linux on another drive after windows. If the windows drive was the initial boot drive wouldn't grub overwrite the MBR (again depending on how things were installed).

I think you covered this in your last post but I still have reservations. Looking forward to learning more.

True. I went to BIOS and booted directly to Win7 and did the " mountvol /E " and re-booted and installed SP1 and re-booted and it had to make changes and whatnot. I ran out of time (had to leave for work), but left the computer on to finish. Got home and it was in Windows so I shut it down as it had 4 updates. Turned it back on and it did some more configuring do the the addition of SP1 and it did load fine. Let it settle down for about 5 minutes and re-booted and went to BIOS and set my Kubuntu 10.10 Trinity to be the number 1 boot HDD and here I am with no apparent problems with Win7. It does show I have Windows7 Ultimate with SP1.

Now the only thing I didn't do is see if Buntu will boot with any or no issues. I suspect not but when I finish this post I will check it out.

Well, here I am in Buntu and everything is fine. So, again I thank everybody for their suggestions on this, and I was able to get through it with no problems. Of course this is one of many reasons I run multiple hard drives. Minimal problems. I just gotta remember that sometimes I gotta go straight to my Win7 hdd to correct issues.
