Go to the System Update Readiness Tool webpage. Find the Windows edition and system type of your computer, and then click the link to download the System Update Readiness Tool.

Install and run the tool. Note that it typically takes less than 15 minutes to run, but it might take much longer on some computers. Even if the progress bar seems to stop, the scan is still running, so don't click Cancel.

When you see Installation complete, click Close.

Try installing the service pack you were trying to install previously.

I followed your advise and then went into control panel>windows update. It requested me to install the update software, which I did and then checked for updates and got the same error message as before in my previous post.
I tried this file to download sp1page as well:kb976932 but it never started

Thanks for the replies. I chose the file you suggested and downloaded (with difficulty) the
    "Windows_Win7SP1.7601.17514.101119-1850.AMD64CHK.Symbols.msi "
When I started the install it was titled "Microsoft windows debugging symbols setup "
    Is that what I need???

As retiredlearner asked, did you remove the infection ? If not, do it before installing/updating anything.

I'm sorry I forgot to respond to that question...Yes, I run updated scans with AVG, Malwarebytes, super antispyware and r.kill first...I am showing a clean pc.

When I clink on the above link for KB976932, it takes me to another page which wants me to select one of 5 downloads from Microsoft download center..I think a couple of them are in French..but the first one is an .iso file...all the rest are .msi format. I have not tried the iso yet because I was not sure.

Ok great. After SP1 finished installing you will have to check Windows Update again and install another couple of hundred updates for Windows 7.

You should install the updates in batches of 50 while rebooting in between each batch so you have an easier time installing them.

All 10 of those updates will not install? Do you have Microsoft Office 2007 installed?

Have you tried installing those updates manually from the Microsoft download center?
