I've been searching the Internet all day for drivers for this Notebook and have found most of them.

It's a Windows XP Professional OS but I cannot get online without an Ethernet Controller driver, which I still haven't been able to find. I also need a Multimedia Audio Controller.

It's an old notebook but has hardly been used. The specs are as follows:

    Intel[R] Pentium[R] M
    processor 1.73Ghz
    795 MHz,0.99 GB of RAM
    Physical Address Extension

I still have the original Windows XP Professional disk

Will someone please help me find these two drivers? I've searched every HP Compaq driver site I could find to not avail.

    Thanks so much,

    bellisimo

Hi bellisimo. Here is the HP driver page for that Compaq Notebook,
HP Compaq nc6220 Notebook PC drivers
    .

Scroll down the page and install any drivers that the laptop is still missing.

What I do in a case like this is temporarily plug in a little USB WiFi adapter, go to Windows Update and let it install all available updates. More often than not this will solve the majority of missing driver issues.

    Hi SpywareDr,

Thanks. Problem is, I can't get online without the Ethernet controller driver.

So you can't get online to install the network driver correct? If that is the case then why not download the network driver to a flash drive on another computer and then install the driver on the laptop using the flash drive?

    Thanks, Evan,

Yes, that's right. I've been trying that for hours but the trouble is, there are so many of them and I think I've tried about all of them. I can't tell one from another.
When I go into Device manager, it doesn't give much in the way of specifics, so how could I know which one of the countless drivers for the Compaq nc6220 notebook is the correct one?

    You see my dilemma?

    Thanks again,

    bellisimo

    Yes I see the problem.

At this page it lists the differences between that model of laptop. Its under the Standard Features heading partway down the page.

With that CPU your laptop is either the nc6220 PU982AW#ABA model or the nc6220 PZ510UA#ABA model. Is there a sticker on the laptop that lists that information? Once I know which exact model your laptop is then I can tell you what drivers need to be installed.

You won't need the Ethernet Controller Driver if you use a USB adapter. It will go automatically. I am assuming that you do have a router. Then you can get the ECD that way.

    Hi Evan,

Thank you. I searched the underside of the computer but found no such number. There has been one sticker peeled off. That's probably the one that had the number on it.

I really appreciate the time you've spent on this. I think the only thing I could try is to experiment with one of each, but that's a lot to ask. Perhaps I should try to find an Ethernet LAN Adapter somewhere tomorrow and see if that will work.

Thanks you so much for the time you've given this problem. You've been very generous and it's been a good learning experience for me.

    Thanks again,

    bellisimo

    Hi MrBill,

Thank you for taking the time to way in on this baffling problem. That's a good idea. I didn't know that such cables were available, but I've just Googled it and found both a USB-ended network cable and and Ethernet LAN Adapter, and I think both are worth trying. I'll see what I can find in the store in the morning.

    Much obliged,

    bellisimo

You can also ID your hardware in this way:

Go to Device Manager, look for your hardware, right click & select Properties, select the Details tab, Under Property select Hardware Ids and copy/post the value's listed in your next reply.

There is no cable needed. This is what you need. They make several different ones and price from 10 bucks and up. I always use the cheap ones as they work just as good. You can Google usb wireless adapter and see all the different ones.

Thanks for posting back and I am glad that you found a solution to your problem. Make sure you update any other drivers that the laptop is still missing.

Would you consider this thread resolved or do you have any other questions?

    Thanks again, MrBill,

I'll pick one up and try it. I can get online now when I connect directly to my modem, but I still can't get the wireless connection. I'll go get a USB wireless adapter and see if that will fix the problem.

Yep, know exactly what you mean. I've been there too, many times. That's why I carry a USB WiFi device that I do have a driver for (on a USB key).
