Wow, whatta hassle to recover from a total XP sys crash! Everything needs to be set up again, tweaked, updated, reloaded w/missing data, etc - everything except Firefox! Just replace the default Profile w/a backed up copy & you're rolling again just as if nothing ever happened! Man, I love this program! Why can't Microsoft be more like this - it's almost like they're trying to get everyone w/ intermediate to expert computer savvy to consider the move to Linux? Sure wish everything was this easy, & that I was already using Thunderbird for eMail - guess that'll be next on my slow move to a more tweakable & user friendly OS (Ubuntu?). My props to all those on the Mozilla team - many thanks for a most excellent prg!

That's what I love to hear, and you are so right! Just a quick copy/paste and you're up and running. Samo with Thunderbird, just copy the Thunderbird folder and let it replace the default Profile, and again, all Mail & preferences are there.

I hope all Netscape 7 users are making a note of this..... ;)

    Hi Ramona:

Just a quick question about Thunderbird - am I correct in assuming that it works for multiple eMail accounts (I checked but couldn't find any explicit info on this). Clarification of this is the only thing that's held me back from having already switched to it.

Anyway, I'm so totally happy w/ Firefox (in so many ways) that it's hard to believe I used to be content running IE (except for MS Updates, I still need it to launch 1 old discontinued prg but, other than that, it's Firefox all the way). :)

Also, it's truly wonderful to have someone as incredibly knowledgeable & helpful as you are to assist the rest of us with our questions & problems ...

    Thanks Ramona!

    -User-,

You can have multiple mail accounts, including IMAP, in Thunderbird. When you install the program, it will automatically migrate your Outlook Express settings:

When you are ready to begin let us know, and we'll be more than happy to walk you thru the install.

It's always very gratifying to be able to lend a helping hand. :)

I have nine POP accounts, from three different ISPs, and three IMAP accounts.

-User- explained that he replaced FF's default Profile folder with a backed-up copy when he rebuilt his system, which means that he re-installed FF. He (and, I suspect, most other users) probably are unaware that had he archived his original Program folder, as well, he wouldn't have had to re-install FF.

The Mozilla Foundation doesn't make releases of either FF or TB available in .zip format so, initially, the programs must be installed. Once installed, though, it's easy to use any Zip program to archive the Program and Profile folders.

In the event of a system crash, or if you want to run FF (or TB) on another system, you don't have to install it. Simply unzip the two folders in the location of your choice, giving them names of your choice. They do not have to be located in the default location nor given the default names. Then, it's only necessary to run FF's Profile Manager (Start > Run, type <path to>firefox.exe -p) to create the profiles.ini file, which tells FF where to find the Profile folder. The first time FF is run the required Registry entries will be created.

To illustrate what I mean about locating and naming the folders, my FF Program and Profile folders are located at, respectively:
    E:\MOZILLA\FIREFOX\PROGRAM\FF2.0
    and
    E:\MOZILLA\FIREFOX\PROFILES\JSS2.0
(I have FOLDER NAMES in uppercase and file names in lowercase to more easily differentiate the two.)

Following the old adage that a picture is worth a thousand words, click on the screenshot.
