This isn't the first time this has happened and usually I just reboot the computer and the sound is back.
This time I went to device manager and found:
    Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer
windows Cannot load the device driver. May be corrupted or missing. Code 39.
    driver version 5.1.2535.0

yet when i open my creative sb live audio hq i can play and hear the piano in the programe so the sound card is ok? it was ok yesterday.

    Thanks for any replies.

I'm having a similar problem as well, where my sound card mixer just stops working, but most of the annoying default windows sounds still work.

Only works when i reboot the PC, but since re-installing XP, had a couple more problems pop up, so i believe the only way fix everything, is to, again, start again!

i think you are right, i go even further and use a boot and nuke disc to completely wipe my hard drive clean. Then i re install xp home. but be carefull, my xp disc is stuggling to copy files(scratched maybe) and after the 3rd registration microsoft start asking questions.
