I hate to be beaten

Hi everyone, I have been searching the web to try and find an answer to my immediate problem at work. I have been using an old PC with Windows 98 and things have been going downhill lately. I also have another PC on my desk with Windows XP which I use for another part of my Company.
So what I am trying to do is backup some data from Windows 98 and then restore it into a programme on XP. Well I thought that would be easy but seemingly not. Floppy disc on 98 but not on XP. CD Rom on 98 (LG 52X max) but you can't use it to copy - not very helpful is it. USB ports on 98 but no driver so what is a girl to do?
Can anyone help me on this one - it is my wages programme so its pretty important I get it right - ha! ha! just thought I'd add that in to get you all thinking.................
