....I think I messed things up worse. I disabled systray.exe from msdos.exe and things went well. Thinking that was my problem I downloaded systray.exe from the internet. Oops, it was only an html form explaining what systray.exe does. The problem is I saved it where systray.exe was. I had it overwritten. No more systray.exe. So I went searching and found sndvol32.exe in Windows. I clicked on it and the volumn control panel poped up with the mute checked. I put in my windows98 cd and searched for systray.exe and sndvol32.exe and came up with no such files listed. But I know they are there. I'm hoping to replace both files and things will be ok. Just hoping. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I put in my windows98 cd and searched for systray.exe and sndvol32.exe

When you searched the CD did you point the search to
    [ CDROM LETTER ]:\Win98 ?

yeah I did. I'm trying the search manually. Alot of files there. They may be bunched under another filename or folder or something. But I think search is only looking at folder names, not individual files.

I found "systray.exe" in the Win98_46.cab file in the Win98 setup files. You should be able to find it there or in a cab file in the "40's ". I find that my cab file numbering is slightly off from others as I have a OEM install.

    Good luck.:)

A hint: When you do a Find for files that may be in a cab file, you just put the name, no extension in the Containing Text box. It then reads through them. Then pops up the cab files, with the matching text inside them.
Systray and Sndvol32 are both in Win98_46, with 98SE, found in the above manner.

Thanks guys, I found both files. I deleted them from my c: drive and extracted them from the cd to where they were before and the mute is still checked. Will this nightmare ever end? Do I need to delete all references of these files from the registry before installing also? I can't understand why replacing these files did not solve the problem. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong? Thanks a bunch.

    What you might try.

I believe you do already but just make sure you know where the Win98 .cab files are located.

Go to Control Panel. Open Add/remove software.

    Select Windows Setup Tab.

In the list that comes up scroll down and select multimedia.

Uncheck Audio Compression, Sound Recorder and Volume Control.

Then just OK your way out of there. You should not be asled for the setup files at this time.

When all is done, restart Windows.

Go back to the control panel and recheck all that you unchecked. You will need the location of the setup ( .cab ) files here.

:) I gaureentee nothing :) But it might work.

I wouldn't delete references to those two file in your registry, windows needs systray.
Seeing that this has been going on for a bit, I think you are open to suggestions for something to check. Go into Control Panel\Multimedia Properties. When it opens, click on the Device tab. Look down the list for Mixer Devices, expand by double clicking it, then double click on Mixer for your sound card, check to see if Use Mixer features for this device are enabled and to map through this device.
Do the the same for Line Input Devices.

Billy - I tried it but to no avail, like you said it couldn't hurt and it didn't. :)

Mark- I didn't have to make any changes, there were as you mentioned.

Thank you both and keep me posted if you can think of anything else.

Well guys, I finally found the solution. I spent over two weeks searching for the problem and a solution to it but to no avail. I spent just one day reformatting and reinstalling my programs and managed to rid myself of the problem. I kinda wish I hadn't though. I would have loved to learn what caused it to begin with. But thanks for all your advice.
