speed. I replace the router and installed Gigabit NIC cards. My client PC's are XP Home, Professional, WHS and Vista Home, all have the lateste SP and updates. One of my XP Pro Machines is not able to be accessed after the change-over. It shows up in the workgroup but can't be accessed from other clients. Also on this machine the no other clients in the workgroup show up. Strangely though my mapped network drives to other client show up and i can access them. Also under "My Network Places" shared drive and folders all show and can be accessed. I've run the Network Setup wizard 3x and uninstalled networking in the "Add/Remove Windows Components" section. Workgroup name is the same as all the other clients. I've tried everything I know to do...please help.

    Thanks for replying!!!

    1. by name it says "ping request could not find host ", by ip it times out with all packets lost.

    2. yes

    3. it is definetly a Workgroup.

    4. All those services are running.

    5. I reset the router so i could start over with the configuration hoping that would help. Before reset Gateway IP was 192.168.1.1 now it's 10.0.0.1. with both i've had the same result with this client. Router is Netgear WRN854T.

I kinda wish you hadn't done that!

You reset the router (which changed the gateway) and all your network and Internet access still works??????

In need the LAN IP of this machine.

Do the below on the problem machine.

Paste the following line to an open command prompt and hit enter!

    ipconfig /all > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\ipfig.txt

A file ipfig.txt will appear on the desktop paste the contents of this back to this thread.

Now for comparison do the same on one of the other computers that works normally and paste it back!

OK I have no idea how it worked using 192.xxx.xx.x as before reset!

    Now it matches the LAN.

    On problem computer.

Properties on "Local Area Connection" remove IP6 QOS and any protocol that begins with NW.

    Reboot.

Ping problem machine again from another computer.

    Report back!

Mike, there was no IP6 or NW listed under LAN properties. QoS Packet Scheduler was and i disabled it, rebooted and still same issue. i checked another client running the same OS but different NIC and QoS is enabled on that one and it sees all other clients on the LAN. The problem client has an "Authentication" tab in the properties while the non-problematic one does not. I've tried changing the settings on this tab...i can enable or disable "IEEE 802.1x authentication, Choose a network authentication method: MD5-Challenge, Smart Card or other Certificate, Protected EAP (PEAP). The latter two have adjustable settings. What next? I have a laptop at home that has done the same thing as this one...i tried your suggestions on that one and it didn't work on that one either...XP Pro on that one also.

    Good Afternoon

Ok go to My Computer and Disconnect any mapped drives.

Confirm Firewall is off for now!

To look deeply at you system:
    D/L RSIT http://images.malwareremoval.com/random/RSIT.exe
Run it post both logs here (1 will open on screen the other will be minimized.

    Then

Drag mouse with left button down the lines below across then paste each line below 1 at a time to an open CMD prompt and hit enter, ignore any errors for now.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------
    netsh interface ip delete arpcache

    ipconfig /flushdns

    ipconfig /release *

    ipconfig /renew *

    ipconfig /registerdns

    nbtstat -RR

    netsh winsock show catalog > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\lsp.txt

    netsh winsock reset catalog

    netsh winsock show catalog >> "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\lsp.txt

    netsh int ip reset > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\tcpreset.txt

Reboot test for issue then see new icons on desktop, paste contents of lsp and tcp.txt back to thread.

OK this is if the last post above does not resolve the issue! Do the last post completely before doing this one.

Be sure to post the files created from my last post.

Paste the following command to an open CMD prompt

    netsh dump > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\netshout.txt

then hit the enter key once and wait up to 5 - 8 minutes for the C: prompt to return to the CMD prompt and it will line feed down the screen.

Close CMD window and post the contents of the netshout.txt from the desktop back to this thread.

Reboot and test for issue if not resolved........

    Then do the below.

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
correct the time if needed, then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions
    Reset networking
Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Sorry forgot to ask?

Is ZoneAlarm installed or ever been installed on this computer?

And are you using any Firewall besides the Windows firewall?

Good! The Windows Firewall behind a Router is sufficient in most cases.

Does your Router have a built in Firewall and is it active.

When we fix with this one (and we will) we will tackle the Laptop.

i've been messing with the laptop and i fixed it. seems that the card is going bad, i went back to using the built-in wireless card and it sees the other pc on my home network. the one that is going bad will only connect at 27mb even though it's an N adapter and it gets burning hot to the touch after being in the laptop for about a minute. i tried it in another laptop with same result.

i didn't need to use the steps u laid out for me, i'm not sure which one of these worked cause i did them all at once...
1st i uninstalled the NIC in Device manager
2nd i disable the Norton 360 firewall (i don't think this was the culprit since it was on before and all clients were visable)
3rd in the Computer Tab in System Properties i click the Network ID button and set it up for home use.
Restarted and all was back to normal. Again thanks for all your help...forums like this are so helpful to small business owners like myself who have to do their on IT work.
