I want to use a DLNA Media Server on my Windows XP SP3 Laptop so that my PS3 can fetch music/video, but to do that I need to enable UPnP both at the router level and the PC level.

Routers are easy gadgets. Just click the radio button that said "Enable" under UPnP and I was good to go.

Windows XP? Now this is a tricky beast. I went into Control Panels -> Add/Remove Softwares -> Add/Remove Windows Component -> Networking Services -> checked both "Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client" and "UPnP User Interface ".

Typed in services.msc and tried to find "SSDP Discovery Service ", couldn't find it, so I thought to myself: "Hmm, probably requires a reboot to refresh the services. "

Okay, so I rebooted. Looked in the Services list again, and it still wasn't there.

That's when I hopped on Google and looked into this, it turns out I wasn't able to find anything, and thus my story brings me to here: Why is the Service not even present to begin with? I'd understand if it was Disabled, but nope, it doesn't even want to show its pretty little face.

I'm as stumped as a tree stump can be (okay, lame metaphor), any assistance into this matter is much appreciated.

To be honest I have no idea. Never dealt with a "missing" service.

Try a repair install, hopefully you have your XP installation disk.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.

Thanks for the response Arie, turns out that I didn't end up requiring the UPnP functionality after all--merely forwarding the right ports on my firewall did the trick.

Although I must admit, this is the first time I've ever encountered a missing service as well... I better back up my data ASAP, this might be a sign for further breakdown in the future...?

Well, I don't know what sign it is, but you should always have an up-to-date backup. ;)
