she has windows 2000 and the other night while my sister was using msn messenger a guy got past her Norton firewall and planted something. he teased my sister in a conversation long enough to get remove her start button. then she freaked and turned off the modem.

i think i have found all the files he installed. he seemed to use visual basic to create it which made it easier to find all the stranded bits in the registry.

She bought McAfee security stuff. she used it to find the trojan virus that guy installed. it couldnt find the real virus.

i think we found it all and removed it. but now strange things are happening to my moms computer.

when she turns the computer on everything seems to run normally but her "my documents" file opens for no reason. cant figure out why or how to stop it.

the second thing is, now her dial up connection doesnt want to stay connected.

could those two things be connected to what that guy did and how we cleaned up the aftermath? or is it something else?

then there is the fact that she cant get any microsoft site to load. they all time out. she hasnt updated in months and cant remember if she got the update for those two big viruses that were floating around not too long ago.

what should i be looking for to fix these problems? is there something else i need to download? is there anything i can do to fix this or does she just have to live with it?

any help would be very much appreciated. thank you for your time and help

Avert's Stinger tool is quite helpful for scanning for a number of
worms. http://vil.nai.com/vil/averttools.asp Once you can get to the point of being able to go to the windows update site or if not, get a friend to put important security patches like the one for Blaster on a disk for you to load into her system. Just an idea.
