The problem is that the router does not seem to be compatible with my PCI Network adapter. If I plug in the Router and try and set it up I get the message that it is not connected. I can see that it is trying to connect by the light flashing on the router and in windows flashing connection. If I put a switch in between the computer and the router it works fine. I have followed the set up instructions of the ADSL Router to no avail.
I have tried it on another computer with where the motherboard has on board network and it sees the ADLS Modem router, no problem. So I presume that the Router is not the problem.

    Set up as follows: -
    Win XP Home
Netgear DG834G ADSL Modem I am using the cable supplied by them.
ADMTEK AN 983 PCI Network card
    Switch, CNET 8 Port

Try changing the network cable. There should not be any problem with compatibility between network card & your modem.

Thanks RSINFO. According to the specs. the router comes with a Cat 5 cable, which I presume is a straight cable. I will try a crossover cable. Below are some of the specs.

    Regards

    LAN Ports: Four (4) 10/100 Mbps auto-sensing,
Auto Uplinkâ„¢ RJ-45 ports (one Cat 5 UTP cable
    included), 802.11g access point
    -WAN Port: ADSL RJ-11, T1.413, G.DMT,
    G.Lite, ITU Annex A; Annex B version is DG834GB

Caneman, trying a crossover cable is not going to hurt either the computer or the modem - it might even work. I know it sounds stupid, but I have seen much weird things in networking.

Thanks to everybody for their input, but I cannot get the network running without the switch. I tried another cable, a crossover cable and changed the driver of the PCI network card. Still no go.

Can you try another NIC? Wonder if it's somehow defective.

Trying another NIC is a logical step. Can you disable your firewall (if any) on the computer ?
