Okay, just a quick question. My computer (compaq 5204) has been totally upgraded with a new hard drive, more memory, cd burner etc.. Now this computer is lagging and isn't a speedy as it used to be...(programs getting sticky, have to reboot etc) Could it be that the processor (AMD-K6 3D Processor) is too slow for all of this? And if so...... is it expensive to get a new one and put it all back together again (as opposed to getting a new one?)

I've done all of the upgrading by myself so I'm not afraid to, I was just wondering if this would help instead of going out and buying a whole new computer...

    Hope that makes sense,

    Thanks!

    Hey Kitty Kat.....

How about the usual suspects? You know...temp files, spyware, virus, scandisk, and the everpopular defrag?

BTW that pink font is hard on the eyes.:)

    Hi Bill,

Been there, done all of that. I'm just wondering if it's too much stuff on the comuter (which I use) or the processor is too old??? I've had wonderful help here with cleaning that darned computer out and getting it squeaky clean. :D

It sounds OK to me. Maybe you have too much sitting in your system tray when it starts. When you do ctrl+alt+del, do you have a lot of stuff running?

I'm not familiar with your processor. What speed is it? I went from a PentII, 450 to this AMD Duron at 1.3Ghz and I really can't tell much difference in the speed. I don't do games and that seems to be the reason people need a very fast processor. Also went from 128 Mhz of RAM to 512 Mhz. No big deal. My old computer is in the house and I use it some times to keep the virus defs updated and I really don't notice a big difference in speed.

I think the biggest increase in speed comes with getting rid of the temp internet files, cleaning up the registry etc..

Hi, no I have only 3-4 startup programs. I've done the registry, temp files etc. but it doesn't make a difference. This is an '98 computer and just thought it would be outdated, at least the processor part. I just got this new laptop with a pentium 4 and it FAR exceeds the home pc. Maybe it's the windows 2k that is slow? I dunno...

    Thanks!!

I've heard about Win 2k being laggy compared to Win 9x or ME on older (around 400 Mhz CPU's) hardware. You may want to try a fresh reinstall of Win 2k or has it been sluggish since you installed Win 2k? Or maybe try Win 98SE?

Here are 2 links to CPU upgrades

    http://www.powerleap.com/ I haven't tried these yet

http://www.evertech.com/ I have the Pent. 166mhz to AMD K6-2 @ 400mhz kit installed on the computer I'M using right now, it works great & was upgraded about 1 year ago.

I would upgrade the CPU to be as fast as possible & see if that would help. If not then you would still have a good computer to run WIN 98SE on.

    Hi Kitty Cat

I noticed you had gone thru a upgrade which included a new HD. Just to ask the question, you did INCREASE the size of the drive? In my humble opinion, I prefer not to have the HD past 75% full. A stuffed HD can influence pc performance. Also, did the slow down occur immediatly after the upgrade, after extended use, or installing new software, hardware?

    Hi there,

No the slowing down has been just recently. I've had the new HD/Memory etc for some time now. I haven't done any major changes in quite awhile now. So, I don't know what is the problem here. Just all of a sudden it takes about 10 minutes or so JUST to bootup to the desktop! Its very strange. I don't have a million startup items, only a few.... I dunno what to think here!!

I'll take a peek at the links that were given, thanks !!
