I am running Word 2002 in Win XP Home. When I click on any hyperlink in Word 2002 this action does not open a browser window to the internet site the link points to. This action worked on my original, out-of-the-box installation as shipped to me from the Dell factory, but does not work after a recent format and re-install of the OS and Word 2002.

Also, my default browser is Firefox 1.04 (as it was prior to the re-format).

I have tried the MS Knowledge Base fix recommending entering several dlls successively into the Run command line and clicking Enter. This did not solve the problem.

If anyone has any other solutions I would most happy to see them.

Thanks in advance for your time and attention.

Try a repair of Word ....

Help > Detect and Repair or Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > MS Office/Word > Change/Remove and select the repair option.

Do you get a message about holding the CTRL key when you click the link?

    Already did that, Pete--didn't help.

No, Steve, I have Word 2002 set to open links on a simple mouse click alone.

One thing I did forget to mention is that this version of Word 2002 is part of Microsoft Works Suite 2002. I *re-installed* (after a computer crash) ONLY the Word 2002 portion, by-passing the full Suite installation as I did not want the rest of the Works package cluttering up my hard disk. The original factory installation on this Dell computer was, of course, the full Suite package and Word originally did open links in text by clicking on them.

Do you suppose that, Microsoft, in their typical tie-it-all-together-so-you-have-to-eat-the-whole-enchilada tactics, has this thing programmed such that a partial installation leaves Word 2002 crippled--even though the install wizard clearly implies one can opt for installing Word 2002 alone???

Doubt it - and I tend to be a bit cynical too :)

However - prove the point by installing Works + Word, but before you do that set it up to Ctrl + click to open hyperlinks and see if that route woeks.

I thank eveyone for their posts on this weird problem, but looks we can close this thread. A couple days ago I inadvertantly stumbled onto a fix for my unresponsive hyperlink problem. After reading in the latest issue of PC World about a new "critical update" for MS Office 2000-2002, I gave in to the impulse to download and install it (something I don't usually do).

Whatever else it's good for, the patch corrected whatever was glitched up in my copy of Word 2002. Go figure.

Thanks again for your help. Windows BBS is usually the first site I turn to if I get into something computer-wise which is beyond my ability to figure out and correct (which thankfully doesn't happen very often anymore).

You people embody the best of what the Internet is all about.

You're welcome - thanks for the update.

Generally a good idea to apply patches, updates, etc to MS (and other products) IMO. There will always be the odd case of the patch, etc fouling up a system, but this is the exception. Just one rider, hang on for a couple of weeks before applying a new patch and stick around on the BBS - problems with patches, etc generally get reported here.

Some will say if it ain't broke, don't fix it, but some of these patches are far too deep for us mere mortals to understand and pass judgement on - except as the end user. Most are beneficial, especially those related to security.
