The HP660C printer works and has a proper paper supply. Occasionally
I get an “Out of Paper” message. If I reboot and ask for the printing it
proceeds just fine. The OS is Windows 98

What is causing the “Out of Paper” message? What might I do to avoid
    the need to reboot?

Another problem is when I request a printing I get a message saying
the color cartridge needs to be reinstalled. I have done the reinstallation
a number of times. What might I do to settle this thing?

If the printer has a sleep option->try turning it off.

I would remove and reinstall the drivers. Remove the HP program in Add/Remove Programs and check for any programs from your previous printer/s. Go to Start > Settings > Printers and remove/delete all that are there and say yes to removing unneeded files.

    Reboot without the printer connected.

Reboot and follow the installation instructions closely.

If that doesn't work, post back. HP has a good knowledge base, we may find something there.

    Luck

[Is it only happening from printing through one program, eg a word processing program? The program may be selecting a secondary set of drivers for it. If you use the Print button on the toolbar, try going File > Print and check the settings (the printer it has selected) before printing]

I did something even more drastic. I brought the system to its knees by reformatting the disk and installing a completely new OS. I then installed the printer. I have the same results. Every now and then I get this "Out of paper message...." It does not happen too often but enough to make one wonder what in the hell is causing it. The point is that all I need to do is restart the system and the printing just becomes ginger-peachy.

    Hi David,

Here is the HP Support page for your model:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...us&dlc=en&submit.y=8&submit.x=7&lang=en&cc=us

Have a look through some of the possible solutions in "Solve a problem" ( "errors" and "compatibility issues "). It certainly sounds like you can rule drivers out.

Have a look at the "How to use" -> "maintain ", because it could be something stuck somewhere, eg. shreds of paper stuck in a sensor.

I had a good experience with HP where I am (OZ). Had problems with a printer and took it to a HP service centre. It just need the carridge bar cleaned properly...cost $0. When the problem happened again and I didn't know the proceedure, it was explained to me over the phone. I now know it is there on the HP website.

Maybe drop it into your nearest service centre and ask for a quote on repairs, if the repair cost is high, get another printer (or live with the problem), though you may find a bill for $0 like me ;) .

Well, I went to the HP site and told them the story. The answer I received was to re-install LPT1. Now I really didn't think this would do anything for the majority of the time the printer and the port were getting along just fine.
But for want of being able to say, " Well I did that ", to the HP people the next time it happened I deleted LPT1 and then reinstalled it.

Hey! They just may be right. So far I have not experienced my original
    "Out of Paper " trouble.

I dunno why reinstalling the port would get rid of the problem but, as I said, things look pretty good so far.

David, thanks for letting us (+ me) know. When driver problems are suspected I always rip them out further up the chain if reinstalling the base drivers does not work. Haven't had to do that with a printer before. Good to know.
