    Hi Guys,
I have a HP XT412 laptop w/XP build 2600 that crashed and I had to reinstall the OEM XP system.
Now I cannot access auto updates (access denied)
I downloaded SP3 from MS but when I run it (express version). I get "Need SP1 installed ". When I try to run the sp1 express version, it starts then trys to download from a wesite that does not exist. then aborts. Then I tried to load 'OXPSP1.EXE', (full version) get the message "expected version not foundl error'.
The OEM disks has IE6, the MS site wants me to upload to IE8 which is fine wih me but It also crashes when I run download.
I reinstalled once 4-5 years ago and I don't remember any problems then.
I don't think I did anything wrong when i reinstalled but now I'm at a loss.
    Help If You can. Thanks

Hi AirHead. Instead of downloading Service Pack 1, you can download and install Windows XP Service Pack 2 first then install Service Pack 3.

Download Windows XP Service Pack 2.

After Windows XP Service Pack 2 installs then install Service Pack 3 that you already downloaded.

    Hi Evan;
Sorry I'm so slow but you know how it is.
The site you refer is for a network installation. I use Vista for my server and when I try to download it aborts.
It refers me to use windows update, which I have tried but my Xp system will not connect. I get the message "Can't access Windows Update from Windows XP"
I will try and access microsoft.com downloads and see if I have any luck there. I have to go to the doctor (about 45 miles away) so that will kill most of today. If I get back early enough I will keep trying. I will keep you posted.
As I mentioned in first post "windows Update" does not work on xp. Will try and figure that out first as it might be the answer to my problems. What say?
Thanks again for your time. Back Soon.

Don't be fooled by the name. Microsoft suggests that the particular download is for
But you can use it just fine (and your only option if you can't access Windows Update).

It should download just fine, not matter the OS you use.

Yea, that's a known situation if you try to access WU with an old version of XP (which anything < SP2 of course is).

Nah, not worth your time. Just download and install SP2, then update to SP3 & be done with it!

    Hi Evan & Arie,
After 3 fails to download it finally let me download SP2, then when I ran it I got the following.
“Setup has detected that another update is in progress. Please complete that installation or removal and try againâ€. I clicked ok and the sp2 setup wizard appeared. So I clicked NEXT and it looks like we are on the way.
Looks like I must have clicked twice by accident. Using my touch pad.
OK its running processes after install, So it looks like you guys saved the day for me. Thank You very much.
Sorry I don't see where to check SOLVED. Thanks.:p
