Ok I am running a HP nx6310 laptop. I need to restore the factory defaults from the hp recovery partition. The partition wont boot, says there is a problem with the boot config file. I already installed a temp win xp over the old xp because it was super infected and i couldnt use it. i went into the hp recovery partition and found the start.exe file and opened it and it started up the recovery program, in which my options are: recover factory settings and backup files, or recover factory os and apps, drivers ect. I tried the second option, and it starts the process, but every couple seconds a dailog box pops up saying it cant open various files and i can only click OK. so i went through a whole recovery process like this clicking ok about 900 million times then it completes and a restart button appears, i click it and the computer reboots into the temp install of xp i put on the machine and it does not continue with the hp recovery. I dont know what to do I am stuck

    Welcome to WindowsBBS :)

I guess you never made a set of Recovery disks when you acquired the computer - from new?

Sounds to me like your computer is heavily infected as you post and installing XP over itself is not likely to clear the infections unless you formatted the drive - and even then some infection can remain.

If the copy of XP you used is not installed on another computer and is totally legit I would wipe the entire drive and start afresh.

The necessary drivers are available at HP - I know because I had an nx6310 on which I installed Windows 7 and then wiped it clean to install XP again before passing it on to my sister.

The HP software is mainly bloatware which you can well do without.

Its a computer I'm working on for a friend. There are no recovery CD's. Just the HP Recovery Partition. The Win XP cd I used to install is already used somewhere else I just used it as a temporary install, it will deactivate in 30days. When I installed it I did a complete format of the C: partition and left the D: partition( the hp recovery) intact. Is there anyway to edit the boot.ini file on the recovery partition to make it boot? when i try to boot from F11 it says the windows root system32 file hal.dll is corrupt or missing and to reinstall it. If I do this will it solve my problem? If so where can I get that file? The Win XP install cd?

    Guess that's a $64,000 question :)

If the Recovery partition is corrupt there is probably little that you can do about it bar install a new OS - my nx6310 ran pretty well on 7 with the RAM maxed out.

Although it is possible to replace hall.dll from the XP CD as outlined here .....

How To Restore Hal.dll From the Windows XP CD

You will see that this method is for the installed OS. If my HP ProBook is anything to go by the Recovery Partition does not have a drive letter which suggests that replacing the hall.dll by this method is a non-starter.

What folows is pure supposition - I have no idea if it will work or not and you try it at your own risk ......

Extract hall.dll from the XP CD as indicated in the article via the Recovery Console using the command .....

expand d:\i386\hal.dl_ c:\windows\system32, but replace the path in red with say My Documents or some other location.

If you can get into the Recovery Partition rename the existing hal.dll to, say, halold.dll if Windows will allow and copy over the new version.

I wouldn't be holding my breath at this point :), but I guess you have nothing to lose.

You may have to order a set of recovery disks from hp. That wipes everything and you have the option of installing the recovery partition or not installing it.

I checked at HP for the availibility of Recovery discs, but could find nothing. Seems like from 2005 (?) they ceased to provide them and included the facility to burn your own instead.

With HP you can still order recovery disks. Maybe HP stopped providing them for this computer. I ordered and received recovery disks for my two HP laptops but they were purchased in 2010.
