I just bought a new HP All in one PSC 1350 printer/scanner/copier, installed it, and my fairly new Dell with Win/XP Pro refused to boot. Apparently this is a KNOWN problem that HP refuses to fix. It’s even described on HP’s website. It occurs because the PC tries to boot through the USB port from the memory card reader in the printer. When I turn the printer off, the PC boots properly. I can’t believe that HP would put out a product with such a basic error. Is this all there is to it? Am I missing something here?
Are there other all in one devices (HP or other) that work properly? Is there anything to do about it besides turning off the printer before booting the PC?

Hey Roger: Nutty problem isn't it. I had a similar problem with an HP USB Scanner. Scanner plugged in, no boot. Unplug, boot. Drove me crazy too. If I booted with the scanner unplugged and then plugged it in, it worked as advertised.

Somebody on this board advised to plug in to another USB port, had been plugged into a hub. Moved the plug to the front USB port on the tower. Same problem.

Moved the plug to the back of the machine, problem solved.

Seems that direct plug to Motherboard will allow boot with this scanner, but not any port connected to the Motherboard by wire.

I don't know about the printer, but if you are using a hub or front USB port, you might want to try direct to the motherboard.

The other thought is resetting the Bios Boot Order, 1. floppy, 2. CDROM 3. HDD 0, 4. Other boot device: Disable.

As far as having to turn off the printer, that may not be all bad. One of the things that will @#$!up a printer's memory is having a power failure while it is powered up. Besides, you'll save some money on your electric bill.

Hope you can solve your problem.

    Martin

Do non-HP devices have the same problem?

Thanks Martin, for your response. I can indeed turn my printer off and work around the problem. But I can't believe all USB devices have this problem. Do non-HP devices have this same problem?

I don't know about all HP USB devices, just my experience with the scanner and your printer. The HP scanner is the only USB device I have owned that exhibited the problem.

I also might add that the scanner was plugged into a hub previously attached to an earlier computer without exhibiting the problem. Different motherboard.

    Another computer mystery,
