My HP officejet 4610 now has a mind of it's own. It refuses to print specific items. While it will print a word Doc, all i get is a blank page when i try to print my emails or other stuff from my laptop. Help, please ...

Hi Jimfox, Welcome to Windowsbbs! :)

The first thing I would try would be to install the latest driver from this link, HP Officejet 4610 All-in-One Printer Driver. After the driver installs, reboot the computer and see if there is any change.

Also please enter your System Details. It helps us in answering your questions.

Thanks Terminator, help & support has suggested drivers as well. I am using a Lenovo T61 laptop, wireless, 2.0 Gig of ram, intel core2 duo, cpu T7300. XP Pro.
Would i have to update the driver in the main desktop as well? ( I should try printing from the desktop first. )

    Hi Jimfox,
Begs the question - was it printing your emails previously? What has happened recently, updates, software changes anything new?

Yes, it was printing everything i threw at it. Updates & software happen all the time with PC's., so it can't be that. Perhaps the printer is stamping it's foot because the cartridges are'nt genuine HP? Lol.

It was printing wirelessly from your XP Pro laptop and your emails are from where? Outlook,Thunderbird, Google etc. More info please.
Just read your last Post. When was the HP printer last serviced? Years back we were getting garbage print from our HP (670 I think) and pressing the Start and new page buttons together and releasing simultaneously cleared the printer memory which was the cause of the problem. Early model HP printers were prone to memory scramble if you tried to work them too fast.

Have you tried printing via a USB cable and seeing if that helps?

Yep, all good there, mate. I did an email print from the main PC & it worked, so the problem is in the laptop. I am now going to uninstall & reinstall the printer. Will post how it goes, ok?

Did an uninstall & reinstall, Still got the same problem.
Strange thing is, the install wizard keeps telling me to plug in the cable, it doesn't recognize that this is a wireless laptop.
When i tried to run the scan doctor, i get a " HP Officejet not found. "
I can print emails directly from the Desktop, but not from here.
The only other thing i will try is use the Desktop & try to configure from there, but, at the moment it is Beer O/clock, & i'm losing interest fast.
Thanks for your help mate ...

You may find that you have to use the cable install first - then you can do the wireless after it's all working OK. I had to do that with my HP Notebook to HP 2540 Printer. I think the procedure in my User Manual tells you to connect by cable and follow the instructions. This may be the place to look for your answers. Wireless Printing Center | HP® Official Site
My Manual has a section dealing with Change from a USB connection to a Wireless connection. Neil.

    Using XP?

This is how to install the network printer:

    1. Run Add new printer wizard.
    2. Select LOCAL printer attached to this computer, not network printer.
    3. Uncheck the Automatically detect...Next
    4. Select the Create New Port > Standard TCP/IP Port > Next
    5. Enter Printer Name or IP Address box, enter the IP Address of the printer (can be printed out from the printer menu)
    6. Choose driver if there already or install driver from download or cd.

Later versions of Windows install wifi and wired network printers via the Network Printer option, XP installs network printers via Local Printers > custom port option.

    Thanks all,
I have tried everything mentioned, uninstalled , reinstalled, reconnected, but the problem still exists.
My BBS mate Mattman was here the other day & he reckons the problem is in the Laptop itself, & the only way to fix it is Format & start from scratch.
I am not going there, so i will just put up with it.
It is a simple matter to copy & paste my emails into Word & print from there.
Word does a better job, anyway.
Thanks again for all your help ...
    Over & out.

There are 2 methods of setting up a wifi printer. The first is to install the printer as a Network Printer as I mentioned above. This makes the printer available to any computer or device on the LAN. The other method is when the device connects directly to the printer's wifi print server, the communication does not pass through the wifi router but goes directly to the printer. The second method is not the best, I've found most printer software installers prefer the second method but it's better to manually setup using the first method.

Also, any network printer should have a static LAN IP address assigned PRIOR to doing printer setup on the computer or device. I've never failed at setting up HP printers.

I strongly disagree that the problem is the laptop operating system. I believe the problem is either incorrect drivers or user error.
