Working on my brother's pc and need input. He says he bought it 4 years ago and is not sure what version of windows he has (VISTA or 7?)

HP Pavilion dc7 was overheating and shutting down right after boot up.
    He replaced the fan.

Now upon boot up: "Your computer can't come out of hibernation.:
    Oxc000000d error

Unplugged and pulled battery. Held start for 30 seconds. Reconnected power cord and rebooted. Goes to same error code. Will not respond to keyboard command to "Enter ".

Have tried to go into BIOS by f10. Able to get there and able to press f9, but will not respond to keys strokes from here, cannot enter, esc, or anything else.

    Any suggestions?

Did you look at the tag on the bottom of the PC to see what OS?
If it was over heating, could of fried the MOBO and you are stuck.

Disassembled it because he had left out 13 screws! Reassembled everything and cleaned out the crud. Finally got it to boot up but keyboard is still not responding. Can use mouse but not keys. OS is Windows 7.

Finally tried a restart. Went directly into disk check. Lots of corrupted and orphaned files. Will see what happens from here.

Chkdsk completed and keyboard still unresponsive.
Went into device manager to check status of keyboard. Says it is working properly.
Tried a system restore. Unable to restore, suggests doing chkdsk.
Was hoping not to have to reset to factory, but I cannot go online to do anything with it because I can't type in my network key. All the simple solutions require a working keyboard.......

Plug in a USB keyboard as a temporary measure.

Ok. Got the keyboard and am attempting some housekeeping. Have flashed the bios. Has never been updated obviously....

Back to the pc keyboard. Weird. Some keys work. Can activate Caps lock, but not number lock and now f keys not responding.

Is there another way to get to the bios to check the keyboard without using the external keyboard? Since I'm using plug-in keyboard it's not responding to keystrokes during startup.

If your BIOS is not currently set to Enable legacy USB support, a USB keyboard will not work.
AFAIK - no. To enter BIOS commands must be sent to the PC from an input device. i.e. a keyboard or keypad. As this is a laptop there will be no PS/2 port - a PS/2 keyboard would work. but not if connected via an adaptor to USB.

From your initial post it is possible that some connections inside the computer were disturbed during the fitting of the fan - even possible that the overheating caused damage to the motherboard or that in the dismantling process components were accidentally damaged.

Checked the connector ribbon for the keyboard. The green lock down tab has been broken and is only half there, so I am assuming that is the reason for the random keystroke problem. Is that a piece that can be scavenged from parts or will he need a new MB?

Problem solved. Found out that the latch is not replaceable so used some household engineering techniques. Keyboard is working!

Used low temp hot glue gun to anchor connector down, then used a thin piece of carboard to work into the fins and hold connector in. Spread another strip of glue and held it while it set. Put a piece of electrical tape over to firmly secure.:D

Love it when I beat the odds!
