I just bought a new hp officejet 5610 about a week ago. This is an all-in-one (printer, copier, fax, scanner). The problem I'm having is that I can't get it to scan. My o/s is windows xp pro sp2. I ordered the most current software/drivers from hp. HP suggested that the problem is with .net framework. I followed their instructions; removed the hp software, reinstalled; reinstalled .net, etc. I also contacted sony (my notebook is still under warrenty) after re-checking everything with the tech, he suggested that it might be a problem with the device itself. At one point I was able to copy a document using the front panel, but now even that won't work. One other suggestion was that the device might need to be connected to a self-powered usb hub. Does anyone have any other ideas before I exchange it for another one?

    Hi,
Did you have another scanner before this one? If so, you will need to remove all traces of the old scanner's software (Add/Remove Programs) and drivers (Device Manager)...and then probably uninstall and reinstall the drivers and software for the Officejet.

The self-powered hub suggestion is a good one.

Yes, Matt, I had an old officejet 710, but I removed all traces before installing the new one. I talked to hp adv. support and they still believe it is a problem with .net, however since the device will not even initialize now I will exchange it tomorrow and see what happens with the new one.

I just wanted to post an update. I returned the 5610 and got another one. I completely uninstalled the software (again!) and re-installed. I also bought a self-powered usb hub. I connected the new 5610 to that. I ran the install, the same as always, and guess what! Everything works. I'm going to assume that the first 5610 was defective. DC
