    HP G60-553NR Notebook with Pentium T4300 running W7 64bit.
The machine seems to run fine until we try a restart after an install or database update like in Superantispyware.
During a normal start there is a usually a short period (1-2 seconds) where the screen goes dark between the Win7 splash/balls turning to windows and the welcome screen.
If this machine has been on for 15 min or longer that dark period lasts indefinitely. We hear the windows seven sound and the hard drive light blinks with the sound of it spinning but the screen stays dark. In fact it is not just black it has the slight dark green shade it has when powered down. We need to hold the power button to turn it off then and wait.
If we keep it off for around 30 mins and allow it to cool it will start normally after we hit enter for a normal start because it was not shut down properly.

I did a little research and it seems the video card in part of the mother board and has overheating issues, we may be out of luck as it is over a year old.
It will run on full bright all day if we do not try a shut down and restart.

Anybody have any ideas or had this problem?

    Thanks in advance,
    Dan

I have a G60-230US that does almost the same thing. I thought it was Vista related, but I upgraded to Windows 7 and it does the same thing. With mine, as long as it has just gone to sleep everything is fine. But if I leave it overnight and it goes into hibernate, the video won't come back. I have to hit the power button, then hit it again and the video comes back and everything is fine. It will work fine until I leave it overnight again. I have updated the video drivers and there was no change.

If it seems to be a heat problem, I would look at getting it opened up and any dust cleaned out so that the cooling system is working as efficiently as possible.

I don't think HP provide Service Manuals for download. You could think about attempting it yourself, taking it to a local repairer or look up the nearest HP service centre that they list at their website. You could phone first and get a quote.

    Thanks for the reply Matt.
I am wondering if there is a temp switch that is preventing the video section from running on warm restarts.
I will open it up and see if it is dusty or if the fan is dirty.
We tried calling HP. They said "sure, send it in with your credit card info and we will take care of it ".

:D, yeah, sure! Although the HP service people I have dealt with here have been exceptionally helpful, given me free advice, etc.

The dust gets trapped at the "start" of the heatsink, probably right next to the fan's propeller. The fins are very narrow and it is not hard for dust to block them. Think about if you use it in a dust prone environment, like apart from sitting it on your clothes in your lap, a lot of people will use it sitting on carpet or rugs.

You will probably just need to remove the keypad, that should give you good access to the fan/cooling section.

If you blow the dust out, hold the fan steady and try to make sure the dust doesn't just blow into the other sections.
