I have a HP Notebook with Win 10 home 64 bit. I can use the keyboard to log in but, when I am on the desktop, the keyboard won't work. The touch pad works fine. I purchased this at the end of November 2015. I presume, rightly or wrongly, that this may be a windows issue?:(

Any help would be gratefully received.

Hi BrianC500, I wouldn't say it's a problem as my HP 1000 Notebook works perfectly. This unit has come through W8 to W8.1 update, I doubled the RAM and upgraded to W10.
I then changed the HDD to SSD and it's been through airport X-rays at least a dozen times.
Have you had a look in Device Manager to see if it's Power Management is set to turn it off to save power? Neil.

What HP Notebook PC is it and what was the original OS that was installed. Also look in the battery compartment for the Product Number(P/N) or you can find it in HP Support Assistant if it's included with win 10.

    Hi,

Thanks for trying to help. I wouldn't say it's a power management issue as it's worked perfectly until 2 days ago. It was purchased new last November (2015) with Win 10. It's product code is POU71EA#ABU.

I've scanned for malware, viruses, et al with no change. The keyboard works fine at the log in screen. As soon as I log on to desk top, the keyboard won't work.

Same problem when running Windows 10 in Safe mode?

To get into Safe mode in Windows 10:
    1. Restart your PC. When you get to the sign-in screen, hold the Shift key down while you select Power (icom) > Restart.

    2. After your PC restarts to the Choose an option screen, select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.

    3. After your PC restarts, you'll see a list of options. Select 4] or F4 to start your PC in Safe Mode. Or if you'll need to use the Internet, select 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking.

I followed your instructions and unfortunately the key board still wasn't working. I then reverted to a restore point about 8 days ago when the laptop was working properly, hey presto! Everything is now working as it should. I'm now working through any downloads I may have made since that restore point, to see if anything may have caused the problem.

I would like to thank you all for all your help. Thanks very much.
