So i've had a hp deskjet 940c printer for about 6 years and out of no where it just stps working. i was trying to see what the problem was by reinstalling drivers, checking plugs etc. When i try to print it says that the paper is out or that theres an error. Idk what seems to be the problem.

Hi and welcome to the BBS,

If you want to try reinstalling, go Control Panel -> Add or Remove Programs and uninstall the software for it, then uninstall (delete) the printer in the Printers and Faxes folder. Reboot and try installing again.

Look for updated drivers at HP
    www.hp.com/support
Also read their FAQs and maintenance information. There should be instructions for what to look for to clean and check for shredded paper. It may need to be blown out with compressed air.

Look in the manual for how to print out a self-test page, if it prints, the information from the computer is not right, if it doesn't print, there is a problem with the printer itself.

The ink cartridges run along a (silver) bar, that bar needs to be really clean. There should be info on the website about how to clean it.

Try different levels of paper. Some parts should be removable in case you have a paper jam, are those parts seated correctly?

In the end, 6 years is not a bad life, if it seems to be "broken ". They are good models though, if they keep going. Now it seems you buy a printer, then it is more economical to throw it away rather than replace the ink cartridges (but they only part-fill the ink cartridges in a new printer).

If you need to buy a new one, do some research. If you don't need inkjet quality and you do a reasonable amount of printing, consider a Laser printer. The cartridges may seem costly, but you should get a much better number of pages per cartridge. I can see inkjets getting phased out, now that colour laser printers are becoming affordable and more popular.

    Matt
