Hi, I have three Hp deskjets printers (670C, 690C, 692C), and all of them seem to have the same problem. They start printing ok, but when several pages have been printed, it stops, make a strange noise, leave that page blank, and continues printing strange caracters....... I have cleaned the cartridges contacts as HP Support advised me, but the problem is still in my printers....... some idea???
    Thank you!

    Hello PPe,

We must be distant relatives, I have just spent most of yesterday battling 670Cs and 690Cs (trying to find cartridges, installing drivers etc).

First thing to do is get some alcohol and clean the carridge bar. I think the problem is that the cartridge carridge is running too far and jamming.

Check here about the "clutch actuator ":
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...n&cc=us&product=58156&dlc=en&docname=bpd09137

If you are not using the HP drivers (Windows has installed it's own drivers), delete the printers in the Printers folder (right-click>Delete). Download and install the drivers from Hewlett Packard.

    Edit: Try the suggestions here:

Matt, I checked the clutch actuator, and I tried changing the cable, reinstalling drivers and another PC before writting my first message.
Some time ago, I found a 692C with its cover switch working bad, I replaced it and it started working fine... so I thought these would have the same problem, but the switch didn't get them working OK, so I tried the clutch and the drivers, cable and Pc. Tonight I'll clean the carridge bar and then I'll tell you if that was the problem.
I'm using Hp drivers in W98 but, I didn't found WinXP HP drivers so I installed it with drivers included in WP.
    Thank you!

Not sure what "WP" is? If you might be using the wrong drivers, completely remove them (check in Add/Remove programs for HP utilities and delete them in the Printers folder...also if it asks to keep/delete shared files, delete them). HP drivers:
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...=bpd09186&product=59308&dlc=en&lang=en#N10142

    Hope you have some luck.

Matt, there are not HP drivers for WinXP, so I have to install the printer using the drivers included in Win XP.
I cleaned the cartridge bar, but the problem didn't desapeared.. some other idea?
    Thanks!

IF you folks do not have any better luck than I did you will need to get a newer Printer. I had a 690C that just became a big PAIN ( you know where ) after I upgraded to XP.

I wound up getting an HP 5550 and NO problems since. It will even SHARE over my LAN. But that also got to be a pain. Especially when I would shut this machine ( which it was tied to ) down.

So I then went out and got a 5850 and plugged it into the Router and it can now be used by any of the three machines as it now actually a standalone for each machine. ( if I don't shut it off that is. )

OSs included 98SE and XP Pro.

But Networking is a whole different ballgame entirely. But one well worth it if you have several machines.

Sorry, I did not look hard enough at those drivers.

From my original reply, did you get to try any of the printers on another computer? Although, since they all act the same the problem will be the computer, not the printer.

I think the next step is this:
This would involve removing the LPT port in Device Manager. There will be no problem doing this, it will automatically reinstall when you reboot.
Next step would be find updated drivers for your motherboard.

I would want to be happy that all the drivers were were working correctly, but you say that that it prints a few pages before stopping. I might wonder about the Windows "spooler ". I have only had one or two problems with the spooler. It might pay to go to Printers/Printing in Help/Support and run through the troubleshooter. There may be information at the Microsoft website (I will check if I get time).

Since I have I come across problems with the spooler I only print in "chunks" (unless I know that the computer will print many pages without a problem). When I print I go to File (menu) and select Print there. I change the "Print Range" to a few pages at a time. This may be a way out for you if you cannot fix the problem straight out.

Hi again! Last weekend, I disabled the bidirectional communication, and I thought I've repaired it because it started to work ok, but today the problem appeared again. Next weekend I'll try cleaning all the printer hardware not only the cartridge bar.

    False alarm...drat!

If the bidirectional communcation had some effect, I seriously doubt that it is an actual hardware problem. It must be in Windows (drivers) somewhere...although, are you only printing from the one software progam? The program may be printing outside the margins.
The same hardware problem in three printers is very unlikely (apart from those I mentioned).

Check you have the correct settings for the paper (in the printer properties).

Set one of the printers up on another Win XP machine and see how it performs.

I had a problem with a Laserjet on XP at work that was shared between two computers. I tried to delete the printer in the printer folder, the computer crashed saying "Deleting... ". I think it still says that today. I just set the printer up on the other computer and it works fine for both. I don't think the printer could be reinstalled on the original computer unless Windows was reinstalled (not my problem, I just pick up the pieces for the IT department :D )

I may well be a bit out of line here, but I think you folks are wasting your time messing with those printers connected to XP.

Yes, It is likely if the hardware being discussed is not ( or at least may not and mine was not ) be compatable and with Windows XP.

As I mentioned before. I had to get a newer printer. I also had to get a newer Scanner for the same reason.

If HP itself does not have the proper XP drivers, it is very unlikely the Windows will have them either.

The printers and OS ( XP I believe ) are just not compatable.

If we want all these fancy newer OSs we need to be ready to upgrade both Hardware and Software to match. As you can read I had to.

I think you're right BillyBob, PPe maybe banging his/her head against a brick wall somewhat. HP have not made Win XP specific drivers and I think that the ones that Win XP use are really only basic. If something goes wrong with them, it appears you have to wait for a reinstall to correct them.

My Win XP system ran my HP 600 series printers OK, but my Win XP system is only used for reference and by the kids, it does not have a lot of programs, etc, put on and taken off (my Win XP has been moved to another computer and I have not set it up to share the printer on the network yet). I feel that once XP starts having trouble with the printers it is almost impossible to repair without a reinstall. I will check the M$ website if I get time, but I think I have tried before.

Maybe the only ways out. Try a reinstall or get a new printer.

Hi, Billy and Matt, about WinXP, I only tried to install the HP but as it didn't work, I installed it again in a PC runninG 98SE, and the problem didn't dissapeared. I did all Matt advised me and the problem did'nt desappeared. Today, I had some spare time ando so I was playing with the printer, I have an HP laserjet 1010, so I could play with 692. I think the cartridges (no original) I was using were the problem. They worked ok a lot of time, and so I didn't thought they were the problem. Today I put original cartridges and te printer didn't fail any more. I hope the problem is worked out!
    Thank you all!
    Pablo.
