Have HP 6540 printer connected to my host computer, usb connection and I can get my remote laptop to recognize the host computer and the printer and it will print from the laptop commands, but only after I set it up. When I turn off or reboot the laptop, then it refuses to print via the labtop. It brings up the printer and says it is printing but actually does not print, eventually It says printing error (does not say what the error is). If I uninstall and reinstall it will print, but only for the current session. It prints fine from the host computer and it prints if I hook the labtop to the printer, but not remotely except if I reinstall it. Any ideas?

    Thanks

I suggest you run the 6540 installation program (the disk you got with the printer) on the laptop, then go back and set it up again as a network printer.

Look at the network. Are those two computers the only ones on the network? If so, if there is no server in the network, I think you would need to set the desktop with a static IP address.

Check things like "File and Printer Sharing" in Network Connections on the desktop. Also in the Properties of the printer on the desktop machine, check it's Shared settings.

I wonder if it could be the Firewall on the desktop machine (either machine?) blocking it.

As you can see, networking is not my best topic ( a little hit and miss) :D

    Mattman,

Thanks for the reply. Probably is the firewall in one or both computers? Am running Vista Home Premium on both and they don't recognize the disk that came with the computer and install the drivers that came with the computers. Am not sure if I know how to install the static IP addresses for the printers. the HP instructions say to go to the setup button on the printer HP6540, but I cannot find the button. I will keep trying to find a solution.

    Printer sharing

Prev. posted in Hardware, but problem still not resolved. I have a desktop with a HP deskjet 6500 Series printer connected usb. Have linksys router which desktop is connected to via modem. Have a Toshiba labtop which connects wireless to the desktop and works fine, the problem is that I can
go to network and and install printer on the labtop and it will recognize my printer and print as long as I do not turn off the computers, but refuses to print after a re-boot. It recognizes the desktop and the printer and says that it is printing, but then says printer error(does not say what error), and does not print unless I uninstall and reinstall the printer to the laptop. Do not think it is the firewall, as it works fine as long as I do not turn system off. I have tried various options, and they all work as long as I do not re-boot. I see in googling that the problem could be something to do with the static IP address for the printer? Don't understand? and have tried to setup a local port with a IP address, but does not work? Any suggestions or links that might help solve this problem?
