How do you turn off that terrible screeching noise when connecting to the internet? I've done it before but forgot how. My friend's computer does it and it drives me nuts.

On the Start Menu go to Settings>Control Panel>Modems>Properties>Connections>Advanced and type "M0" without quotes in the "Extra Settings" box. That's an "M" and a "zero ". You might have to restart the computer for it to work.

That should shut off the speaker. For other modem extra settings see this link: http://www.modemhelp.net/basicatcommand.shtml

The advantage of that screaching noise is that you know the modem is at least trying to work:) When working on other people's computers I detest quiet modems - no idea if anything is happening or not :D

If the volume comes out of the speakers (the ones you listen to your music on) you can just mute the line-in in the volume control applet. I'm like Pete though. I like to hear what's going on. Different strokes I guess. :)
