I have a small office network, 5 PCs running Windows XP Professional, sharing Microsoft Office files of a 6th PC.

I recently changed network card to a D-Link DGE-530T to give a network speed of 1 Gbps. Previously it was 100 Mbps. My Local Area Connection icon shows I have a speed of 1 Gbps, but when I tested speed of getting a shared file open from the network location, there was no noticeable increase in speed.

How can I test if I genuinely have a 1 Gbps connection?

    Welcome to WindowsBBS;)

Did you also update the router and cables to Cat6?

Do you have a gigabit router? If no, then 100 mbs max.

Sorry, I did not give enough information at first.

The PC cabling is all Category 6. They are plugged into a unmanaged switch, HP 8-port ProCurve 2708, which handles 1 GB.

The router to internet is Zyxel Prestige 660.

If the HP is connected to the router you will get 100 mb/s max because the router's switch is 10/100.

    Zyxel Prestige 660 Hardware Specifications

    * ADSL port: RJ-11 Connector for POTS; RJ-45 Connector for ISDN/U-R2
    * Ethernet port: 4-port Switch,10/100M Auto MDI/MDIX

Thanks for that Tony ... I was thinking that the Zyxel was only needed for a WAN connection (ie, to internet). Will the LAN itself work only with the switch?

And if my Local Area Connection shows 1.0 Gbps (those little flashing PC icons in bottom right of screen), that then does not neccesarily mean that 1.0 Gbps is happening?

The connection to the router will be at 10/100 but between comps should be gigabit. Transfer a large 500+ MB file and count seconds.

I did the test with a large file as you suggested : size was 258 292 KB

Each PC I tested was as follows - speed of the file transfer in seconds :

    AMD Turion Mobile 2000 Mhz
    2048 MB RAM
    10 seconds

    AMD Sempron 3200+ 1800 Mhz
    512 MB RAM
    8 seconds

Intel Core 2 Duo 2333 Mhz
    2048 MB RAM
    6 seconds

    Intel Celeron 3.06 Ghz
    1.43 GB RAM
    37 seconds

I also tested a similar Celeron, which I know is working on 100 Mbps, and its results similar to the above Celeron, which is supposed to be 1 Gbps

    Intel Celeron 2.40 Ghz
    1.50 GB RAM
    Network speed 100 Mbps
    36 seconds

Can you make any sense of that?

    258 292 KB = approx 258 MegaBytes

    AMD Turion Mobile 2000 Mhz
    2048 MB RAM
    10 seconds
    = approx 25.8 MegaBytes/sec = 25,800 Bytes/sec = 206,400 bits/sec

    1 byte = 8 bits.

HOw about the different speeds for each PC - I am not sure exactly how much processing power is used for simply copying, I would though have expected more simialr results for each PC for this task ... and the ones that are slow are somehow not utilising the network speed? Hmm, I don't know ...

All cat6 cables are not created equal.

What brand of Cat6 cable and model of cat6 cable?

What brand and model Cat6 module?

What brand and model patch panel?

Were the segments tested and certified?
    Do you have certification reports?
