I very much want to leave AOL for Internet Explorer, but can't seem to find a way to do it. I signed up for MSN, thinking that would get me there, but no.

How can I use IE as my Internet access and email address?

Sounds like a stupid question, but I'm now totally confused.

IE is a browser, not a service provider. When connected to AOL, you can Minimize the AOL window and open IE and commence to browsing. With MSN, you can close the MSN Explorer and use IE instead. To use IE as an email, your ISP provider must have web based email, AOL doesn't.
You could use Outlook Express as an email program, but you must configure the POP3 and SMTP servers in the email account. MSN may have already done this for you.

Clicxk the 'minus' symbol at top right corner of MSN window, then click the IE icon on your desktop or in the Programs Menu (Start Button\Programs|Internet Explorer)

Do NOT close the MSN window, clicking the minus symbol "minimizes" it to the Taskbar.

In my experience with MSN Explorer, when you close the MSN window, a message box will appear advising you even that it is closed, your connection is still active.

    Switching from AOL to IE

So, as I understand it, you can't go directly to IE? You have to go to MSN, minimize that, and then go to IE?

You really just need the internet connection to use IE.

    1. Get rid of the Awful OnLine account. Watch your bank account or however you pay for it. There are tales out there about being billed even when the account is cancelled.

2.Here are a few pages dealing with exporting AOL proprietary files. They don't want to make switching to a REAL provider easy for you.

    AOLeave

    AOL Alternatives

URL Organizer 2 (for converting Favorite Places to other formats)

    Address Magic Personal Edition

    SaveMyFavorites

    pfc2pst (converts stored AOL messages)

MyBookmarks (Online bookmark storage, can convert/export/import)

    3. Uninstall the AOHell software. This is akin to uninstalling dandelions from the lawn, but it can be done.

Completely Removing AOL from your system

    or

    Uninstalling AOL

There are horror stories about having to reinstall DUNS and TCP/IP software, but the majority of sites detailing the de-installation don't mention it, so it's evidently uncommon.

    4. Install one (or more) of the major browsers - IE, Netscape, Opera, et al. IE is the defacto standard for web pages, and some sites won't display properly with other browsers. Blame this on the site owners for not using strictly compliant code.

Also install an email client. IE installations usually include Outlook Express. Netscape and Opera have so-so email capabilities. There are others such as Pegasus and Eudora.

    5. Sign up with a reliable local ISP (Internet Service Provider). Look in your phone book or go here.

The List (may not include all your local ISPs

Local ISPs allow any browser to be used, and will walk you through configuring your machine, or offer a small utility that automates that process. Plus, your money stays in your area, your tech support is usually excellent, and you're helping a small business owner instead of a megacorp.

    6. Import the info you saved from AOHell.

Is it true that if I use MSN I can't send/receive AOL email?

    Switching from AOL

OK, Dr Doom! I've copied your instructions and once I'm hooked up to a new ISP I'll follow them to the letter. Many thanks.

Getting rid of AOL seems something like adolescence - I've outgrown the training wheels, and am branching out on my own, and it does get complicated...

Webzilla gives very good info on the actual removal of AOL. I'll go with them.
    Thanks.
