    Hi walterm
    Welcome to the boards.
I use a Linksys BEFSR41 Router. Extremely pleased with it.

    Hi again!
You know...eerily...I had absolutely none. I plugged the cables in, hit the reset...and I was good to go. It's a very popular router..... has a built in firewall.....though I still run Zonealarm as well, to catch the one or two probes taht have actually made it through. I'd not use anything else.

    You are Welcome Daizy.

Also, as far as I know it is recommended that a Software Firewall also be run to control the outgoing traffic.

Plus the AV software of course.

But my Original Answer is still stands.

    Same Router and no problems.

Netgear's 8-port RO318 router is certainly worthy of consideration. It is (or at least used to be) the cheapest router with SPI capabilities. The RT314 (a 4-port model comparable to Daizy's and BB's Linksys models (but with superior filtering) and also similarly priced (at ~£40 less than the RO318)) is also worth a gander.

i know zulch about networking and teaching myself now.

I have now set my own FTP server, + my main machine sharing a cable modem, and I am using a netgear RP114 router...works great, with built in firewall and it cost me £74.01 inc VAT + Del from my own personal PC dealer :D

... however, an aesthete could find himself/herself deeply offended after only the briefest coup d'oeil by the consequences of the insensible localization of the Linksys in a non-lapis lazuli environment.

Brett - check to see if they are adding odd looking tablets or powders to your libations.

I understand there is one that will cause a period of extreme loquaciousness. Which is not in and of itself such a bad thing but it doesn't end there.

If you find yourself penning a declaration of war on the UK (or any part of it) then you will have moved into the second phase and should seek help immediately.

Probably best to post that one on the Virus section of the forum though.

    Router!

I also use the Linksys - and as Daizy stated - you can add a software firewall to catch other "phone home" "adware" items.

Best of all - a router allows you to only use the PC you need, and not have a "HOST" computer that is running "ICS ".

Config is basically PnP in W2K, WXP - and also in WME if I recall currectly.

Such things are prohibited by law. The Pure Beer Act of 1874 is still in force and provides as follows:

That said, there is a remarkably fine oyster stout brewed locally which, whilst lacking the punch of a good yard of barley wine over Guinness, does nonetheless have a remarkably destabilizing effect :D
