How do you run two monitors on Windows XP?

You do have to use a VGA card specially designed to support two monitors?

Or can you use two AGP or PCI VGA cards as long as they are indentical?

There is suppose to be a setting in the display properties called DualView but it's not showing up on my PC. I'm assuming it's because my on board VGA doesn't support it.
Or I don't have the correct hardware setup.

I tried an experiment on a spare PC which has an on-board VGA and when I tried installing a VGA card in the PCI slot it automatically disabled the one on the motherboard and recognized the one in the PCI slot. So that didn't work.

That is the simplest way - almost all modern graphics cards have this facility and many are far from expensive.

DualView is set up either in the graphics card software or through Display Properties.
No - the line you are looking for is 'Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor' on the Secondary monitor screen (#2 monitor highlighted) - screenshot.

Dual View is to be found in the graphics card setup if the card supports 2 monitors.

In theory you can use 2 graphics cards if you have the slots available, but there are difficulties which are not readily soluble. Not an arrangement I have tried - my graphics cards going back several years have always had twin outputs.

You may also need to check your system BIOS, sometimes when connecting a graphics card the onboard graphics are automatically disabled, normally there will be a setting to override this.

As Pete has said you could encounter other problems but generally there is no need to use identical cards (or even resolutions).

I've run with Dual Monitors - like forever :D (well, 12 years now)

When I first setup dual monitors I did it by running dual PCI graphic cards. While you could run different cards, as long as you have 2 of the same, there is no problem.

But since the introduction of graphic cards with dual monitor support build in (i.e. with 2 -or more- connectors), I've been running those.

I always make sure I get a video card with Dual DVI output, not 1 DVI & 1 VGA.
